Freelance Materials Engineer – Bulk Earthworks (HS2)
Location: HS2 Major Infrastructure Project – Great Missenden
Duration: 12 months

Are you a Materials Engineer experienced in bulk earthworks and construction quality? We are seeking a freelance Materials Engineer for a Tier 1 contractor supporting HS2 earthworks. The role focuses on material testing, classification, and quality assurance to ensure excavated and imported materials meet project specifications and can be reused safely.
What you’ll do:
- Oversee field and laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, and stabilised materials
- Analyse test data and classify materials for reuse approval
- Monitor earthworks compliance with Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
- Investigate and resolve material non-conformance issues
- Maintain quality records and digital completion data (Dalux)
What we’re looking for:
- Degree in materials, civil, or geotechnical engineering
- Minimum 2 years site experience in bulk earthworks and material testing
- Strong knowledge of soil and aggregate testing, compaction, and stabilisation
- Experience with Tier 1 or major infrastructure projects preferred
- Familiar with ITP compliance and QC reporting
