This position has arisen due to the upcoming retirement of our Head Gardener of 21 years. Originally planted in the late 19th century, the gardens at Penwarne have been recorded by the Cornwall Gardens Trust and include a large number of specimen trees and plants. A spectacular Spring garden, the owners have been undertaking a programme of renovation, extending the seasonal interest. The grounds include formal gardens and ponds, a walled garden with greenhouse and kitchen garden (approximately 10 acres), woodlands and fields (a further 22 acres).

Duties Include:

  • Garden maintenance: regular maintenance of the garden/grounds including lawn care, mowing, weeding, pruning, hedge trimming, fruit and vegetable picking, clearing and maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Plant/Vegetable cultivation: overseeing the planting, management, harvesting and care.
  • Seasonal planning: Manage a seasonal timetable for garden maintenance tasks.
  • Pest and disease control: identifying and managing pests and diseases.
  • Equipment and tool maintenance: general cleaning and maintenance of gardening tools and machinery, scheduling services with contractors as required.
  • Liaison with outside contractors, such as tree surgeons.
  • Weekly seasonal tasks to support maintenance of Tennis court and swimming pool.

We are looking for:

  • Horticultural qualifications with excellent plant knowledge.
  • Five years experience, ideally within a large garden/estate.
  • Competence with tractor, lawnmowers, chainsaw, pruning equipment and garden tools.
  • Ideally certification, such as Cs30, CS31, Pa1/6a.
  • A self-motivated individual as this is a sole gardener position; good communication skills to work in a private, family garden.
