Typical Activities
This is atechnical leadership rolewhere approximately70% of yourtime is spenthands-on developingsoftware, with the remaining30% focused online management anddeveloping a high-performing engineeringteam.
Working closely withthe Head of Software, you'll remain activesoftware engineers whileproviding leadership, coachingand technical directionacross the engineeringfunction.
This roleis ideal forexperienced software engineerswho enjoy mentoringothers but stillwant to spendthe majority oftheir time designing, developing and reviewinghigh-quality software.
- Software Engineering (Approximately 70%)
- Design, develop andmaintain production-qualitysoftware as anactive member ofengineering teams
- Write, review andoptimise high-qualitycode, primarily inreal-time C
- Produce and reviewsoftware architecture, design documentation andtechnical proposals
- Participate in codereviews, design reviewsand engineering governanceactivities
- Support engineers throughtechnical mentoring, pairingand collaborative problemsolving
- Own the quality, maintainability and deliveryof software solutions
- Apply modern softwareengineering practices including CI/CD, automatedtesting and securedevelopment
- Contribute to planning, estimation and technicaldecision making acrossmultiple projects
- Drive consistency inengineering standards, tooling and developmentpractices
- Line Management (Approximately30%)
- Line manage ateam of approximatelyeight software engineers
- Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, objective setting andperformance reviews
- Support career developmentthrough coaching, mentoringand development planning
- Identify training needsand help growcapability across theengineering function
- Support recruitment, onboardingand succession planning
- Work alongside the Head of Softwareto develop technicalcapability aligned tofuture business needs
- Encourage knowledge sharingand collaboration acrossengineering teams
- Contribute to continuousimprovement of engineeringprocesses, standards andbest practice
- What we're lookingfor
- Strong background insoftware engineering withthe ability anddesire to remainhands-on
- Significant commercial experiencedeveloping software in C within embeddedor low-levelsystems
- Experience working throughoutthe full softwaredevelopment lifecycle ina product developmentenvironment
- Strong understanding ofmodern software engineeringpractices including CI/CD, code reviewand automated testing
- Ability to interprethigh-level requirementsand translate theminto practical technicalsolutions
- Strong communication skillswith the abilityto engage technicaland non-technicalstakeholders
- Experience producing and reviewing high-quality technical documentation
- Experience supporting careerprogression and mentoringengineers
- Ability to build, motivate and develop high-performing engineeringteams
Desirable
- Experience with Goor Rust
- Experience developing modernweb applications
- Python and Bashscripting
- UI development using Qt or wx Python
- Experience with automatedtesting frameworks suchas Robot Frameworkor Open HTF
- Knowledge of fuzzingand software analysistools (AFL, PRQA, Lint or equivalent)
- Experience debugging embeddedsystems using oscilloscopes, bench power suppliesand other laboratoryequipment
- Experience driving engineeringprocess improvements acrossmultiple teams

Qualifications & Eligibility
To be eligiblefor this positionyou must
- Hold a relevantdegree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Computer Engineering or equivalentprofessional experience, and;
- Be a Britishcitizen, and;
- Hold or beeligible for UKNational Security Vetting(NSV) at
