Typical Activities

This is a technical leadership role where approximately 70% of your time is spent hands-on developing software, with the remaining 30% focused on line management and developing a high-performing engineering team. Working closely with the Head of Software, you'll remain active as a software engineer while providing leadership, coaching and technical direction across the engineering function. This role is ideal for experienced software engineers who enjoy mentoring others but still want to spend the majority of their time designing, developing and reviewing high-quality software.

  • Software Engineering (Approximately 70%)
    • Design, develop and maintain production-quality software as an active member of engineering teams
    • Write, review and optimise high-quality code, primarily in real-time C
    • Produce and review software architecture, design documentation and technical proposals
    • Participate in code reviews, design reviews and engineering governance activities
    • Support engineers through technical mentoring, pairing and collaborative problem solving
    • Own the quality, maintainability and delivery of software solutions
    • Apply modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing and secure development
    • Contribute to planning, estimation and technical decision making across multiple projects
    • Drive consistency in engineering standards, tooling and development practices
  • Line Management (Approximately 30%)
    • Line manage a team of approximately eight software engineers
    • Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, objective setting and performance reviews
    • Support career development through coaching, mentoring and development planning
    • Identify training needs and help grow capability across the engineering function
    • Support recruitment, onboarding and succession planning
    • Work alongside the Head of Software to develop technical capability aligned to future business needs
    • Encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration across engineering teams
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, standards and best practice

What we're looking for

  • Strong background in software engineering with the ability and desire to remain hands-on
  • Significant commercial experience developing software in C within embedded or low-level systems
  • Experience working throughout the full software development lifecycle in a product development environment
  • Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, code review and automated testing
  • Ability to interpret high-level requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience producing and reviewing high-quality technical documentation
  • Experience supporting career progression and mentoring engineers
  • Ability to build, motivate and develop high-performing engineering teams

Desirable

  • Experience with Go or Rust
  • Experience developing modern web applications
  • Python and Bash scripting
  • UI development using Qt or wxPython
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as Robot Framework or OpenHTF
  • Knowledge of fuzzing and software analysis tools (AFL, PRQA, Lint or equivalent)
  • Experience debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, bench power supplies and other laboratory equipment
  • Experience driving engineering process improvements across multiple teams
