Main duties of the job:
- Clinical Care & Diagnosis: Managing face-to-face, telephone, and video appointments to assess symptoms and medical history. Carrying out clinical exams and basic tests (e.g., blood pressure, urine samples) to aid diagnosis. Issuing acute and repeat prescriptions and monitoring for side effects or drug interactions. Performing small surgical tasks like joint injections, mole removals, or wound care. Assessing and treating conditions like anxiety and depression, providing counselling, or referring to psychiatric services.
- Monitoring long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension. Administering immunizations, providing lifestyle advice (smoking cessation, weight loss), and overseeing cancer screenings. Visiting elderly or housebound patients who cannot travel to the surgery. Coordinating end-of-life care for patients to ensure dignity and comfort.
- Deciding when a patient needs more specialized investigation and writing referral letters to hospital consultants. Liaising with nurses, pharmacists, midwives, and social workers to ensure integrated care. Helping patients navigate complex healthcare pathways and ensuring they receive appropriate social support.
- Administration & Practice Management: Keeping accurate, confidential clinical records for every patient encounter. Reviewing and actioning hundreds of blood tests, X-rays, and specialist letters daily. Issuing fit notes (sick notes), death certificates, and medical reports for insurance or legal purposes.
