The Role

A leading specialist engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Senior Hydrologist Consultant to join its London team, working on technically challenging projects involving dams, tailings storage facilities and water management infrastructure.

The role will suit a hydrologist with consultancy experience who is looking to develop their career within the dams and mining sector.

You will work across a range of UK and international projects, providing technical input into hydrological assessments, flood studies, dam safety and water management schemes.

This is a highly technical role with opportunities to work alongside experienced engineers and specialists across hydrology, hydraulics, geotechnical engineering and dam engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake hydrological assessments for dams, reservoirs and tailings storage facilities.
  • Complete flood studies, rainfall-runoff assessments and catchment hydrology investigations.
  • Undertake dam-break and breach flood assessments, including downstream inundation modelling.
  • Assess extreme rainfall, flood events and design flows for dam and tailings infrastructure.
  • Develop and review hydrological and hydraulic models.
  • Support water balance and site-wide water management assessments for mining projects.
  • Produce technical reports, calculations and hydrological assessments.
  • Provide technical input into dam safety assessments and risk studies.
  • Assist with the assessment and design of spillways, diversion channels and flood protection measures.
  • Analyse rainfall, river flow, catchment and climate data.
  • Work with GIS and other modelling tools to assess flood pathways and catchment characteristics.
  • Liaise with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Undertake occasional site visits and international travel where required.
  • Support the preparation of technical proposals and contribute to business development.

About You

The successful candidate will have a degree in Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources or a related discipline, together with relevant consultancy experience.

Ideally, you will have

  • Experience working in hydrology, flood risk, water resources or hydraulic modelling.
  • An interest in or experience of dams, tailings or mining-related projects.
  • Experience undertaking hydrological assessments and flood studies.
  • Knowledge of dam-break, breach or inundation modelling would be highly beneficial.
  • Experience with software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, TUFLOW, Flood Modeller or similar.
  • Strong GIS skills, ideally including Arc GIS or QGIS.
  • Understanding of rainfall-runoff modelling, flood estimation and catchment hydrology.
  • Strong technical report writing and data analysis skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Willingness to travel internationally for project and site work.
  • Chartered status or progress towards CEng, C. WEM or an equivalent professional qualification would be advantageous.
