A leading environmental consultancy is looking to appoint a Senior Flood Risk Consultant to join its growing Exeter team. This is a technical role suited to an experienced flood risk professional with a strong background in hydraulic modelling, hydrology and flood risk assessment, looking to take on greater responsibility across a varied project portfolio.

The Role

You will work on a range of flood risk and water environment projects, providing technical input from initial assessment through to detailed modelling and reporting. The role will involve working closely with clients, regulators and multidisciplinary teams, as well as supporting more junior members of the team.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking flood risk assessments for residential, commercial and infrastructure developments.
  • Developing and reviewing 1D and 2D hydraulic models.
  • Carrying out hydrological assessments and flood flow estimation.
  • Using modelling packages such as TUFLOW, Flood Modeller, HEC-RAS or InfoWorks ICM.
  • Producing technical reports, modelling assessments and supporting documentation.
  • Assessing fluvial, pluvial and surface water flood risk, including climate change scenarios.
  • Developing flood mitigation and drainage solutions.
  • Providing technical input into planning applications and development proposals.
  • Liaising with the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Undertaking site visits, surveys and data collection where required.
  • Supporting project management, client liaison and fee proposals.
  • Mentoring and providing technical guidance to junior consultants.
  • Contributing to business development and identifying opportunities for further work.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Several years' consultancy experience within flood risk, hydrology or hydraulic modelling.
  • Strong practical experience of hydraulic modelling and flood risk assessment.
  • Experience with TUFLOW, Flood Modeller, HEC-RAS and/or InfoWorks ICM.
  • Good knowledge of UK flood risk legislation, planning policy and Environment Agency requirements.
  • Experience working on development, infrastructure or water-sector projects.
  • Strong technical report writing and communication skills.
  • The ability to manage projects and work independently.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers/consultants would be advantageous.
  • Chartership or progress towards CIWEM, CEng, CEnv or a similar professional qualification would be beneficial.
