Production Trainee – The Scheme

Penguin Random House UK is inviting applications for the Production Trainee role within The Scheme, a six‑month, paid traineeship aimed at bringing new voices into publishing. The trainee will work across the Children’s and Quadrille publishing houses, supporting the production of colour‑illustrated print titles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support production of print titles, including costing, scheduling, quality control, tracking deliveries and attending meetings.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external suppliers to ensure smooth delivery and compliance with deadlines.
  • Assist with colour‑management processes and contribute to sustainability initiatives.
  • Document and learn production workflows to build foundational knowledge of the publishing operation.

Knowledge and Skills Developed:

  • Understanding of book production from concept to finished product.
  • Colour‑management and technical system use (e.g., Biblio).
  • Communication, negotiation, organisational and detail‑oriented skills.
  • Exposure to sustainability goals within the production context.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Right to work in the UK for the full duration of the traineeship; no visa sponsorship offered.
  • Age 18 or older (no degree required).
  • Self‑identification as coming from a lower socio‑economic background, measured against parental occupation at age 14, as defined by the Social Mobility Commission. Accepted categories include:
    • Technical and craft occupations (e.g., motor mechanic, plumber, electrician, gardener).
    • Routine, semi‑routine manual and service occupations (e.g., postal worker, machine operative, security guard, cleaner, waiter).
    • Unemployed (claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance or unemployment benefit for more than a year).

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Annual salary of ÂŁ25,500 (equivalent to ÂŁ12,750 for the six‑month traineeship).
  • Travel bursary for applicants commuting from outside London.
