About the team
Penguin Michael Joseph publishes some of the world’s most popular and commercially successful authors and brands, including Jamie Oliver, Marian Keyes, Dr Julie Smith, Claire Douglas, SenLin Yu and Dawn French. We specialise in women’s fiction, crime and thriller, fantasy, romance, cookery, memoir and lifestyle books. Many of our authors are now, or soon will be, household names here in the UK and around the world. We seek out the very best authors in their field and bring their books to the widest possible audience. We take an author’s vision and turn it into a beautiful book people can’t help but talk about.

The role
You will lead marketing activities across the entire Penguin Michael Joseph list, helping to develop a range of high-profile brands, authors and talent in both fiction and non-fiction publishing. Creating awareness of and engagement with our books, authors and brands will be at the heart of what you do in order to drive sales for the division. Working closely with the Publicity Director and reporting to the Communications Director, you will have creative and strategic input into pitches, new business and group projects in addition to contributing to our on-going success by overseeing and driving creative, innovative and highly effective campaigns.
Key responsibilities:
- Strategic oversight of all marketing campaigns for the division, ensuring they are targeted, high quality and within budget
- Provide strong and progressive people leadership, with the ability to motivate and mobilise your team to deliver best-in-class campaigns that drive sales
- You’ll be culturally plugged in, identifying new consumer trends to implement the most effective and innovative campaigns on the most appropriate platforms
- Drive robust analysis to ensure each campaign is measured in its success and effectiveness
- You will play an important role as a convincing voice for Marketing, representing the department at various meetings and events, both internally and externally
- Attend acquisitions meetings and provide marketing analysis on potential acquisitions
- Establish key relationships with other departments such as Sales and Editorial, as well as the international and global teams, and galvanise colleagues in other areas to help bring your team’s campaigns to success
What you’ll bring
- Proven experience of effectively running high-profile book marketing campaigns within a publishing environment at a senior level
- Demonstrable leadership and strategic decision-making skills
- Exceptional communication and influencing skills
- You’ll be passionate about what you do; full of ideas and not afraid of challenging the status quo and doing things differently
- Strong project management and organisational skills are a must in order to bring your strategy to fruition
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, often with competing deadlines
- Ability to set the right KPIs and measure results and effectiveness of campaigns

£75,000 – £80,000 per annum dependent on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus bonus and benefits.
While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role you will need to work from our Embassy Gardens office a minimum of three days per week, typically Monday – Wednesday.
