We’re looking for a Community Outreach Officer to join us in delivering a supportive, proactive temporary accommodation service. You’ll work directly with a range of local partners and our applicants placed into temporary accommodation under the Homelessness Legislation, helping people to sustain their placements, understand their responsibilities and access the right support and move on assistance into longer-term housing.
What you’ll be doing:
- Act as a key point of contact for households in temporary accommodation, carrying out regular visits to check wellbeing, address issues early by problem solving, & support provision.
- Support residents to access welfare benefits and navigate a range of housing options.
- Provide support ensuring residents understand and comply with accommodation rules and expectations.
- Complete and maintain risk assessments before placements are made and ensure appropriate mitigations are in place.
- Coordinate the sign-in processes, for the Council’s temporary accommodation.
- Liaise with colleagues on Housing Benefit claims and move-on arrangements into settled accommodation.
- Identify support needs and coordinate referrals to internal and external partner agencies, including for safeguarding concerns where necessary.
- Undertake preventative work from eviction and provide support to resolve tenancy issues through liaising with landlords to improve housing stability.
- Undertake health and safety and basic repair inspections of the Council’s temporary accommodation, reporting issues and following up actions.
- Keep accurate case notes and records of placements, visits, actions, occupancy and risk updates.
What we’re looking for:
- Experience in social housing, homelessness services, or working with vulnerable adults.
- Excellent communication and advocacy skills, with the ability to work with people with a range of needs and make a positive difference to their situation.
- Knowledge of a range of partners such as social services, mental health teams, and welfare benefit teams.
- An ability to work independently, prioritise a varied workload and meet deadlines.
- An ability to use IT, including Microsoft Office and keep accurate case records.
- A current driving licence and access to a vehicle, with the ability to travel across the Borough.
- An understanding of equality and diversity in service delivery, and a commitment to safeguarding.
- Willingness to undertake occasional out-of-hours work when required.

- Flexible working, including no set core hours, up to 2 flexi days per month, and compressed hours.
- Up to 31 days annual leave.
- Flexible contracts requiring 2–3 days in the office each week (more if needed), so you should live within commuting distance of Nelson, Lancashire.
