A PA is required for a 62‑year‑old lady, living in the Penshaw area, who has cerebral palsy. She uses a wheelchair and requires 24/7 care. The post is a fixed‑term contract to cover maternity leave, for 40 hours per week with a night‑shift pattern of 4 nights on and 4 nights off (10 pm – 8 am). She experiences muscular contractures and pain, affecting her ability for self‑feeding, dressing, and all aspects of personal care. Skin integrity requires constant monitoring. Daily medication administration is required, and a Nomad tray is provided. Moving and handling experience is beneficial; electric hoists for bedroom and bathroom moving are available in the client’s home.

The post covers a 40‑hour night shift schedule (10 pm – 8 am). It is a fixed‑term contract to cover maternity leave. The P.A. will support the client’s personal care and daily living activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support and/or prompt with personal care: toileting, showering/bathing, transfers, dressing.
  • Support and/or prompt with cooking/meal preparation and eating meals/drinks.
  • Support the client to take medication.
  • Assist with household chores and general homemaking.
  • Be available to perform other duties as reasonably required; the client’s needs may vary day to day.
  • Report all accidents, defects or hazards to the employer immediately and ensure the safety of the individual at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect privacy; no prohibited use of social media.

Qualifications

  • Candidacy limited to 18 years or older (required to administer medication).
  • Previous caring experience is essential.
  • Essential to be honest, reliable, trustworthy and punctual.
  • Ability to work independently, on own initiative, and as part of a team.
  • Good listening skills, empathy and non‑judgemental emotional support.
  • Patient, supportive and caring attitude.
  • Flexibility to adapt to employers’ needs on a daily basis; flexible hours may vary.
  • Have a lively personality.
  • Car driver preferred but not essential.

Required Training

Successful candidates will undertake any training that is necessary and appropriate to the role, including Moving and Handling. Training will be provided by the employer.

Background Checks

Due to the nature of the work, this post requires a satisfactory DBS disclosure with costs covered by the employer. This Position Will Require Waking nights and sleep‑ins.
