We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Master Technician / Workshop Controller to take responsibility for the maintenance, repair, compliance, and operational readiness of a fleet of approximately 70 vehicles. This is a hands‑on leadership role combining advanced diagnostic expertise with workshop management responsibilities. The successful candidate will oversee all workshop activities, ensure maximum vehicle availability, maintain compliance standards, and lead the day‑to‑day operation of the fleet maintenance function.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the daily operation of the workshop and fleet maintenance programme.
- Plan, schedule, and prioritise all servicing, repairs, inspections, and MOT preparation.
- Allocate work effectively to technicians and monitor progress.
- Ensure all repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and to manufacturer standards.
- Minimise vehicle downtime and maximise fleet availability.
Master Technician Duties
- Diagnose and rectify complex mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic faults.
- Provide technical support and guidance to workshop staff.
- Conduct final quality‑control inspections on completed work.
- Stay current with vehicle technology, manufacturer updates, and industry best practice.
- Undertake advanced fault‑finding across a mixed vehicle fleet.
Fleet Compliance & Maintenance
- Ensure all vehicles meet legal, safety, and operational requirements.
- Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and compliance records.
- Oversee MOT scheduling, servicing intervals, and defect management.
- Monitor vehicle condition and recommend replacement or refurbishment where appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation and company policies.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop workshop personnel.
- Conduct performance reviews and identify training requirements.
- Promote a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Support recruitment and onboarding of technical staff when required.
Budget & Cost Control
- Manage workshop expenditure and maintenance budgets.
- Control parts purchasing and inventory levels.
- Negotiate with suppliers and external repair providers.
- Monitor maintenance costs and identify opportunities for savings.
- Deliver cost‑effective fleet maintenance without compromising quality or safety.
Candidate Requirements
- Qualified Master Technician, Senior Technician, Workshop Controller, or Fleet Engineering Supervisor.
- Level 3 NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent qualification in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
- Extensive experience in diagnostics, fault‑finding, and vehicle repair.
- Strong workshop management and leadership experience.
- Excellent planning, organisational, and communication skills.
- Experience managing fleet maintenance operations.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- IRTEC accreditation.
- HGV, LCV, or mixed fleet experience.
- Transport compliance knowledge.
- IOSH or Health & Safety qualification.
- Experience with fleet management software and workshop management systems.
