Senior / Principal Ecologist

Full-Time On-site
Pell Frischmann

Pell Frischmann is a specialist advisory and technical consultancy operating across the built and natural environment, helping to shape a better future for the communities in which we work. We offer consultancy services, with access to specialist sister companies and partners, to support both public and private-sector clients. We work across sectors encompassing buildings, infrastructure, and regeneration.

Originally formed in 1926, we have a unique heritage in delivering client-focused solutions that deliver value through our commercial awareness, sustainable aspirations, and innovative approach. Our distinctive future is defined by our ownership; Pell Frischmann is a part of RSBG SE, the patient capital investment arm of RAG-Stiftung. RAG-Stiftung is a foundation with the long-term public purpose to deal with the environmental and social commitments resulting from the closing of Germany’s coal mining industry. RSBG SE’s mission is to generate sustainable funds for the foundation; so, our work directly contributes to the challenge of fighting global pollution and climate change.

The Opportunity

Due to continued growth, we are looking to appoint a Senior or Principal Ecologist to join our team, based from our London office.

You will play an important role in the technical delivery and coordination of ecological work across a varied portfolio of infrastructure and development projects. These may include highways, rail, water, housing and land development schemes throughout the UK, with a focus on projects within reasonable travelling distance of London.

Depending on your experience and level, you will lead projects, coordinate ecological surveys, oversee reporting and analysis, support junior colleagues and help develop client relationships. At Principal level, there will be a greater focus on technical leadership, commercial management, business development and team development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the ecological elements of multidisciplinary projects, maintaining high standards of safety, quality and environmental responsibility.
  • Take responsibility for the technical quality of ecological surveys, assessments, analysis and reports produced by you and the wider team.
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with relevant ecological legislation, good-practice guidance and Pell Frischmann’s internal quality systems.
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver projects in line with agreed programmes, budgets and client requirements.
  • Apply strong commercial awareness and financial control to ensure work is delivered efficiently and to an exemplary standard.
  • Liaise with clients, statutory consultees, project teams and other stakeholders to achieve project objectives while promoting a high level of environmental protection.
  • Support the planning and forecasting of team workload and utilisation.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals, fee estimates, tenders and bids.
  • Provide line management, technical support and mentoring to junior members of the ecology team.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships that support repeat business and new opportunities.
  • Promote the ecology team’s services internally to framework managers, project managers and technical leads.
  • Help raise the profile of Pell Frischmann’s ecological capabilities with existing and prospective clients.
  • Ensure compliance with internal management systems, procedures and quality requirements.

About You

To be considered for this role, you should have:

  • A relevant degree in ecology, environmental science, biological sciences or a related discipline.
  • Significant post-graduate professional experience within ecological consultancy or a closely related environment.
  • Strong knowledge of UK ecological legislation, planning requirements and current industry guidance.
  • Experience coordinating ecological surveys and producing or reviewing high-quality technical reports.
  • Experience managing ecological inputs across infrastructure or development projects.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, budgets and project deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence liaising with clients, consultees and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience supporting, mentoring or managing junior colleagues.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to suitable transport for site visits.
  • The right to work in the UK.

For appointment at Principal level, we would also expect demonstrable experience in technical leadership, project and commercial management, client development, bid preparation and team leadership.
