The Role We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Civil Engineering Senior Technician Apprentice to join our team while studying towards a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Civil Engineering with London South Bank University (LSBU). This role is ideal for someone looking to build a long‑term career in civil engineering, combining structured academic learning with hands‑on, practical experience across real projects. You will support the delivery of civil engineering designs and technical outputs while developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours required of a senior technician.
Key Responsibilities- Support civil engineering teams in the production of technical drawings, models and design information using CAD and other digital engineering tools.
- Assist with the preparation of calculations, reports, schedules and technical documentation.
- Contribute to the design and delivery of civil engineering projects across relevant sectors (e.g. highways, infrastructure, drainage, or structures, depending on team).
- Work collaboratively with engineers, technicians and wider project teams to meet project deadlines and quality standards.
- Support site investigations, surveys, and data collection where required.
- Ensure all work is carried out in line with relevant standards, specifications, health & safety requirements, and quality procedures.
- Apply learning from the HNC programme directly to workplace tasks and projects.
- Maintain accurate records of work and apprenticeship evidence in line with apprenticeship requirements.
You will study towards an HNC in Civil Engineering delivered by London South Bank University (LSBU). Training will be delivered via a combination of day release, independent study and on‑the‑job learning. You will be supported by a workplace mentor and the wider engineering team throughout the apprenticeship.
Essential Skills, Knowledge & Behaviours- A strong interest in civil engineering and the built environment.
- Good numerical, analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work accurately and follow technical instructions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- A proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
- Some prior exposure to engineering, construction or technical environments.
- Familiarity with CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D) or engineering drawings.
- A Level EEE – Must include Mathematics and preferably a Science in either Chemistry or Physics (UCAS points: 48)
- T-level (Pass or above) in Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning. (UCAS points: 72)
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma MPP in an Engineering subject area or Construction and Built Environment area (Must include Mathematics and Further Mathematics) (UCAS points: 64)
- BTEC Level 3 National Diploma MM in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. (UCAS points: 64)
- Civil Engineering Technician level 3 apprenticeship MP (UCAS points: 48) alongside grade Pass or Distinction at EPA
- Any other technical qualifications awarded with UCAS points at a similar level supported by substantial relevant work experience
