The Role As a Senior or Principal Highways Engineer within our Transport Infrastructure team, you will support or lead the delivery of a wide range of highways and infrastructure projects across the region and country. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, engage with clients, and contribute to high quality engineering solutions.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Implement project requirements in line with client specifications and industry standards
- Lead or contribute to the design and delivery of highways schemes
- Liaise with clients, third parties, and wider project teams
- Mentor junior staff and support team development
- Produce and check technical reports, drawings, and specification
- Supervise site‑based activities where required
Qualifications
- BEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
- MEng or MSc in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
Experience
- Significant experience post‑graduation in highway design or civil infrastructure, construction and site supervision
- Professional engineering qualification with IHT or ICE
- Experience in managing project workloads, and ensuring compliance with briefs and financial constraints
- Knowledge, experience and ability for the implementation of highway design standards, construction practices and relevant legislation on projects
- Alignments & junction 3D modelling (DMRB, in Civils 3D or similar software)
- Drainage

- Road Restraint Systems
- Road Signs and Markings to TSRGD & Traffic Signs Manual
- Active Travel
- Development of Highways Specifications including MCHW
- Demonstrate a good understanding of Health and Safety including CDM responsibilities
- Managing other disciplines to deliver projects
- Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Experience mentoring and developing less experienced staff and the ability to build effective working relationships
- Use of Common Data Environments & BIM levels & strategy
- Utility coordination and clash detection
- Site Experience
- Understanding of commercial management and business focus
Skills
- The ability to work under pressure, with good organisational skills and the ability to plan, organise and manage a complex workload, with shifting deadlines to meet specific targets
- Experience of working in a complex design and project/programme management environment, ideally in infrastructure or a related field and evidence of delivering sustainable results in a large organisation
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to identify and deliver outcomes‑focused solutions to complex situations
- Ability to design highway engineering solutions, analyse complex information and use relevant software for modelling and analysis
- Development of Highways Specifications Civils 3D (or Similar) & AutoCAD / Technical Drawing skills
- Experience of drainage design and use of analytical modelling tools
- Clear, confident and enthusiastic communication skills, both written and oral, to explain complex data to non‑specialist audiences and stakeholders
