We are looking to hire an experienced Senior Transport Planner in our Birmingham office.
About the role
We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Transport Planner to join our dynamic team based in Birmingham city centre. This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in the delivery of innovative, sustainable, and data-driven transport solutions across a diverse range of development and infrastructure projects. As a Senior Transport Planner, you’ll be involved in all aspects of transport planning — including policy and strategy development, scheme optioneering and design, business cases, transport assessment / travel plans, and transport modelling / appraisal. Our projects include corridor studies, active travel, bus priority and road safety. You’ll collaborate closely with clients, local authorities, and multidisciplinary teams, helping to shape transport strategies that support growth, sustainability, and accessibility.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Project & Client Delivery – Take a leading role on a range of transport planning projects, working closely with clients. This may include being a Project Manager or Assistant Project Manager, depending on the size of the project.
- Technical Leadership & Quality Assurance – Ensure that work is compliant with relevant national and local policy, guidance and standards, as well as Pell Frischmann’s Quality Assurance processes, where you will undertake technical review of junior staff work.
- Team Leadership & Mentoring – Support, mentor, and supervise more junior team members to foster good working practice, ensuring continuity of knowledge, and helping build capacity within the team.
- Stakeholder & Client Management – Liaise with clients, local planning authorities, architects, engineers, and other disciplines, presenting findings, reports, schemes, and proposals in meetings or public/external forums.
- Business Development & Practice Growth – Contribute to identifying new opportunities, supporting bids and proposals, to maintain and grow client relationships.
- Sustainability, Innovation & Policy Input – Stay up to date with emerging trends in transport, including the journey to Net Zero, active travel, EV charging, connected / autonomous vehicles and AI in transport.
- Management of Resources & Project Administration – Oversee budget, programme control and progress reporting, ensuring deliverables are on time and within scope.
- Health, Safety & Compliance – Ensure compliance with relevant health & safety legislation in your work and the work of the team.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Transport, Mathematics, Geography, Civil Engineering, Planning or a related subject.
- Experience: Demonstrable postgraduate experience in a Transport Planning role.
- Skills: Familiar with current design codes and standards.
Preferred
- Qualification: Master’s degree in Transport Planning/Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geography or Economics, Chartered or working towards Chartership.
- Experience: Experience of working with public and private sector clients. Experience in undertaking feasibility studies and concept highway design for junctions and corridors using AutoCAD and AutoTrack.
- Skills: Efficient communication skills with a range of audiences, having an excellent level of written and spoken English.
