Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to advance your career in the port marine industry? Would you thrive as part of a dedicated marine pilotage & mooring team, supporting vessel operations at the Port of Great Yarmouth? If so, we are looking for a Pilot Launch Coxswain to join our Marine Operations Team and play a vital role in the safe and efficient running of port activities.

Your Role

As a key member of the Pilotage and Mooring team, you will be responsible for operating the Pilot Launches from Great Yarmouth Port, including the River Yare and Outer Harbour. Your primary duties will involve ensuring the safe boarding and disembarkation of Pilots at sea and delivering an efficient mooring service.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Routine vessel maintenance
  • Assisting with river debris and pollution control
  • Performing general marine service duties, including cleaning and upkeep of the pilot station and adjacent operational areas
  • Participating in team safety discussions, including risk assessment and departmental meetings
  • Assisting in investigations as required and promptly reporting any damage or defects in accordance with company procedures
  • Keeping the Marine Services Manager and Harbour Office informed
  • Undertaking emergency procedures and providing support to the Port during emergency situations

What you’ll bring

Ideally, you’ll have experience and knowledge of working within a busy port/marine environment backed up with the desirable qualifications listed below, with either a proven track record of working within marine pilotage or crew transfer vessel industry with a proven ability to communicate with vessels, prioritise vessel operations in a busy port/marine environment.

The role requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with the flexibility to work a shift pattern that supports a 24/7, year-round operation. Ideally, you will bring proven seagoing experience and a solid understanding of port operations. A good working knowledge of commercial vessel operating systems including radar and VHF is essential, along with strong seamanship and navigation skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships as well as being a confident decision maker, who is able to remain calm under pressure. Basic knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code would also be desirable and a full driving licence is essential.

Desirable qualifications:

  • RYA Powerboat Advanced CoC (Commercially Endorsed) or MCA Boatmasters
  • VHF Operators Licence
  • RYA Radar Certification
  • STCW 95 Fire Fighting, Sea Survival and First Aid
  • ENG1 Medical
