Pebbles Academy Dunfermline is a specialist provision committed to supporting young people who have experienced barriers to success in mainstream education. Many of our pupils are care experienced or have faced trauma, disrupted learning, or social and emotional challenges. Our approach is rooted in relationships, consistency and therapeutic practice. We combine a nurturing, trauma‑informed environment with a broad and flexible curriculum that includes academic qualifications, vocational pathways, and opportunities for personal development. This enables young people to re‑engage with learning, build confidence, and develop the knowledge and skills needed for positive post‑school destinations. We work in close partnership with local authorities, care providers, families, and other professionals to ensure that each young person receives a personalised and holistic education experience.

The Role

We are seeking a committed and adaptable Teacher to deliver a range of curricular areas across the Broad General Education (BGE) and Senior Phase, with a particular strength or interest in Social Subjects desirable. This role requires a flexible practitioner who can respond to the diverse needs of our learners, contribute across subject areas, and support wider curriculum delivery. You will play a key role in re‑engaging young people with education and supporting them to achieve meaningful and sustainable outcomes.

Main Duties, Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Plan and deliver high‑quality, engaging lessons to small groups of pupils, adapting approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Deliver assigned classes, including preparation, assessment and feedback, both in‑person and online where required.
  • Create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes engagement, wellbeing and achievement.
  • Assess, record and report on pupil progress, using this information to inform next steps in learning.
  • Support the development of pupils’ confidence, resilience, and skills for learning, life and work.
  • Contribute to the design and ongoing development of a flexible and relevant curriculum.
  • Prepare pupils for qualifications and support examination processes.
  • Act as a Key Teacher, supporting the pastoral needs of allocated pupils and contributing to multi‑agency planning and review meetings.
  • Manage behaviour in a trauma‑informed manner, maintaining a calm, consistent and supportive ethos.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents/carers, and external partners to support holistic pupil development.
  • Contribute to wider achievement opportunities, including outdoor learning, vocational experiences and life skills programmes.
  • Engage with local employers and organisations to support progression pathways, including work experience opportunities.
  • Promote and safeguard the health, wellbeing and safety of all pupils at all times.
  • Participate in school improvement activities, including planning, self‑evaluation and raising attainment.
  • Undertake ongoing professional learning and contribute to a strong professional learning culture within the school.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Degree qualification with a recognised teaching qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
  • Passion for working with young people who have experienced barriers to learning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils and colleagues.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to develop, trauma‑informed and therapeutic approaches.
  • Commitment to inclusive practice and meeting the needs of learners with Additional Support Needs.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • PVG membership (or willingness to obtain).
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desired

  • Experience of teaching in a secondary school setting, particularly within Social Subjects.
  • Knowledge of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), attachment, mental health, and therapeutic approaches, with the ability to apply these in practice.
  • Experience of supporting learners with Additional Support Needs.
  • Experience of developing flexible, personalised or alternative curricula for disengaged learners.

What we offer you

A salary of £40,201 - £44,946 per annum, pro rata, plus benefits. Annual leave is in line with national entitlement and reflects the relevant local authority's annual leave.
