Functional Skills Tutor (Colchester)

This role is ideal for qualified Functional Skills professionals who are passionate about helping learners achieve success in Maths and English. You'll deliver engaging Functional Skills programmes, provide tailored learner support, and help apprentices build the skills and confidence required for personal and professional growth. The role aligns with industry titles such as Functional Skills Tutor, Functional Skills Trainer, English and Maths Tutor, Learning Coach, Skills Development Tutor, Vocational Tutor, or Adult Education Tutor.

The Role

As a Functional Skills Tutor with Pearson TQ, you'll play a key role in delivering Functional Skills English and Maths qualifications at Levels 1 and 2 to apprentices across our Ministry of Defence and wider training contracts.

This is more than a traditional teaching role. You'll support learners throughout their learning journey, delivering engaging face-to-face and remote learning sessions, monitoring progress, providing coaching and feedback, and helping learners overcome barriers to achievement.

The role is primarily based at Merville Barracks, Circular Road South, Colchester, CO2 7UT, with occasional travel to other Pearson TQ or employer sites as required. Delivery includes classroom-based teaching, remote one-to-one and group support sessions.

In your first six months, your focus will be on building relationships with learners, becoming fully embedded within programme delivery, managing your learner caseload effectively, and supporting learners to achieve their Functional Skills qualifications successfully.

What You'll Own

Success in this role means learners are engaged, progressing confidently through their Functional Skills programmes, achieving their qualifications, and developing the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

You'll:

  • Deliver engaging Functional Skills English and Maths learning programmes at Levels 1 and 2.
  • Manage and support a caseload of learners throughout their learning journey.
  • Deliver high-quality face-to-face, virtual and blended learning experiences.
  • Conduct Functional Skills assessments, including Speaking and Listening assessments and associated awarding body requirements.
  • Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans and learner progress records.
  • Monitor learner progress, providing timely interventions and support where required.
  • Maintain accurate learner records, including e-portfolios, evidence, learner communications and achievement tracking.
  • Create and maintain schemes of work, lesson plans and learning resources tailored to learner needs.
  • Differentiate learning approaches to support diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Prepare learners for assessments and support them to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Provide constructive, developmental and timely feedback to learners.
  • Produce Functional Skills performance and achievement data to support reporting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance, safeguarding and risk management processes.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, resource development and wider team initiatives.
  • Participate in professional development and training activities to maintain and enhance your skills.

  • Experience delivering Functional Skills English and Maths programmes up to Level 2.

  • Experience supporting adult learners in classroom, virtual and blended learning environments.

  • Strong learner engagement and motivational coaching skills.

  • Experience managing learner caseloads and supporting learners to successful completion.

  • The ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learner needs.

  • Experience maintaining learner records and programme documentation.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.

  • Confidence using digital learning platforms and learner management systems.

  • A learner-focused, proactive and collaborative approach.

  • The flexibility to work across different delivery environments and locations.

Essential

  • Relevant teaching qualification (e.g. PTLLS, CTLLS, Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS or equivalent).

  • Minimum Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics.

  • Experience delivering Functional Skills English and/or Maths up to Level 2.

  • Experience delivering face-to-face and remote learning.

  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Access to a vehicle and willingness to travel for Pearson TQ business when required.

Desirable

  • Experience working within apprenticeship programmes.
  • Experience supporting learners within military, public sector or vocational education environments.
  • Experience using e-portfolio and learner management systems.
  • Experience developing learning materials and resources.
  • Assessor qualification.
