In this role, you will deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths and English training to apprentices, helping them build the confidence and core skills they need to succeed in their careers. The tutor delivers English and Mathematics qualifications to Royal Engineer Apprentices and other Pearson TQ apprentices. The main base is 1 RSME, Brompton Barracks, Chatham, with occasional travel to other Pearson TQ or employer sites.
This is a part‑time role, delivering Functional Skills courses Monday‑Thursday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with administrative tasks completed during the day or on Friday evenings. This role aligns to industry‑level titles such as Functional Skills Tutor or Maths & English Trainer.

In this role, you will support apprentices within the Army Apprenticeship programme, helping them develop essential Maths and English skills that underpin their technical training and professional development. You will wake up excited to help learners overcome barriers to learning by delivering engaging sessions, supporting apprentices individually, and seeing them gain the confidence to achieve qualifications that open doors for their future.
In your first six months, you’ll make the biggest impact by building strong relationships with apprentices, creating supportive learning environments, and helping learners progress successfully through their Functional Skills qualifications. What makes this opportunity unique is the variety and purpose behind the training. You’ll work within the Army Apprenticeship programme at Brompton Barracks and Invicta Park Barracks while also contributing to wider Pearson TQ partnerships—supporting learners in environments where strong foundational skills make a real difference to career progression and operational capability.

- Your key priorities will be:
- Deliver high‑quality Functional Skills Maths and English training at Levels 1 and 2 through engaging classroom, remote, and one‑to‑one learning sessions.
- Support apprentices through their learning journey by setting goals, providing feedback, and ensuring they remain motivated and on track to achieve their qualifications.
- Maintain high standards of learner support, documentation, and quality assurance aligned with Pearson TQ and awarding body requirements.
- You will influence learner success by creating practical, contextualised learning experiences that help apprentices see the relevance of Maths and English within their careers.
About You
You bring strong teaching expertise in Functional Skills and a passion for supporting learners to succeed. You bring experience delivering Maths and English Functional Skills, and you build trust quickly, motivate learners, and adapt your approach to meet individual learning needs. Whether it’s delivering an engaging classroom session, providing one‑to‑one support, or helping a learner overcome confidence barriers, you thrive in environments where teaching has a direct impact on learner success.
You must have:
- A recognised teaching qualification (PTLLS, CTLLS, Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS or equivalent).
- A minimum Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics.
- Experience delivering Functional Skills up to Level 2.
- Experience delivering both face‑to‑face and remote learning.
- Strong communication, organisation, and learner support skills.
You are also flexible, enthusiastic, and motivated to continuously improve your teaching practice.
