Independent end-point assessor – Apprenticeship Healthcare Support Worker. The Government has introduced a requirement that all apprenticeships contain an end‑point assessment (EPA) which is a holistic assessment of the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviour (KSBs) that have been learnt throughout the apprenticeship. An independent end‑point assessor (IEA) must be independent of the registered apprenticeship training provider and have no conflict of interest with apprentices. The IEA records and submits EPA outcomes with clear justifications for grading decisions, and work is quality‑assured by Pearson QA representatives.

Key Accountabilities

  • Take part in regular training and standardisation activities for the IEA role.
  • Maintain and provide evidence of ongoing, relevant CPD.
  • Assess candidate performance in accordance with published assessment and grading criteria and procedures, maintaining overall standards.
  • Follow Pearson’s specification, assessment materials and QA protocols related to EPAs.
  • Respond to EPA planning, operational activities, reports and submissions according to service‑level agreements.
  • Report all risks and issues encountered during the end‑point assessment to Pearson.
  • Ensure EPA reports and assessment evidence are of high quality and recorded accurately.
  • Support Pearson with any apprentices’ appeals regarding assessment decisions.
  • Allow additional time for travel when arranging EPAs.

HCSWs report to a registered healthcare practitioner and must act within the limits of their competence, seeking help when needed. They work in a range of healthcare settings and are expected to support apprentices in achieving the Care Certificate during the apprenticeship’s early phase.

Background and Experience (essential)

  • Be occupationally competent.
  • Be a registered healthcare professional or have completed a level 3 apprenticeship or a regulated occupational competence qualification at level 3 or above.
  • Hold, or be working towards, a formal assessor qualification (e.g. A1, assessor component to TAQA).
  • Have experience of working in a healthcare setting within the last 2 years.
  • Experience leading meetings, structured interviews or discussions.
  • Experience complying with quality‑assurance or regulatory requirements.
  • Evidence of commitment to maintaining CPD, in line with new apprenticeship requirements and the EPA specialism, including maintenance of recent occupational experience.
  • Hold current NMC pin number.
  • Have current enhanced DBS and be on the yearly update service.
