A forward-thinking and reputable Referral Unit based in Brent for pupils with challenging behaviours from Primary to Secondary ages are seeking to appoint their next Pastoral Learning Support Mentor ASAP. This is a full time, temporary role and will be made permanent for the right person.

The post involves working with Secondary Aged pupils.

About the Referral Unit:

The Senior Leadership Team are totally committed to the school’s core values in supporting students who find it hard to ‘cope’ in mainstream with a heartfelt supportive education and work together with the staff team in providing a stable and reliable network for the pupils. They provide a fresh start for young people who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education and aim to prepare them for progression to their next stage. Students are provided with a small, nurturing and academically rigorous environment and are re-engaged through high expectations, a supportive environment, and an expectation that they will follow a largely mainstream curriculum and achieve their qualifications. They also work closely with parents and carers to support their child to prepare them for future success.

As a Pastoral/Learning Support Assistant within the School, you will be required to:

  • Supervise pupils or a specific pupil with their learning development
  • Engage and de-escalate any forms of dysregulation within their school day
  • Be a mentor, a 121 support mechanism for their emotional well-being
  • Not let them down
  • Be flexible with the flow of the day and remain professional when the day does not go accordingly to plan
  • To support with safety and security during the school day, supporting ‘wondering’ of pupils and off-site activities
  • To follow safeguarding policy at all times; to immediately raise any concerns as per the school’s procedure
  • You may be required to work between their two sites, transport will be provided for this if you don’t have your own

This is a great role if you have experience of working with pupils who find it hard to cope with mainstream education and a good route to get into teaching as you will soon learn to equip yourself with the necessary tools to manage challenging behaviours.

The Senior Leaders are seeking someone who:

  • Has prior experience of working with SEMH pupils (highly desirable)
  • Can think quickly in certain situations
  • Stays calm under pressure
  • Has a 'can-do' approach and not afraid to get 'stuck in'
  • Sense of humour - not each day is the same!
  • Caring and empathetic

As a valued member of the School, you will benefit with the following:

  • A very supportive Senior Leadership Team
  • Transport provided if required to work between their two sites
  • Free onsite parking
  • Weekly staff training

This role is for you if you have good behaviour management and are passionate about sharing your knowledge with young people. You must be a reflective practitioner and be committed to strong personal growth and continuing professional development.
