Design Systems/Component Libraries & Accessibility
Permanent | Hybrid (Office-first, 4 days/week) | London HQ
£90k per annum + Benefits
We are proud to be supporting the growth of a pioneering product company transforming how small businesses interact with payment and operational technologies. As part of their mission to build a suite of seamless, user-focused applications, they are looking for a Design System Engineer to help scale their customer-facing app ecosystem.
This role will sit within a growing Customer Apps function - responsible for everything the end-user sees and touches. From payment device management and transactions to restaurant operations and loyalty schemes, this is a central team that shapes the user experience across multiple products.
We are looking for someone who sits at the intersection of design and engineering: a frontend specialist with a passion for component libraries, clean APIs, accessibility, and collaborative problem-solving with designers.
Key Responsibilities- Translate UX/UI designs into well-structured, reusable components using modern frontend technologies.
- Design and build component APIs in React and TypeScript, with an eye for quality and scalability. Testing components would also be best placed with this engineer using React Testing Library.
- Champion and embed web accessibility best practices (WCAG, ARIA, screen readers, etc.)
- Create detailed documentation and usage guidance for component libraries and design systems
- Partner closely with product designers to define and evolve consistent design patterns
- Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and contribute to frontend engineering culture
- Mentor colleagues in design system principles and advocate for design consistency across teams
- Expert knowledge of React and TypeScript
- Experience with CSS-in-JS libraries like Vanilla Extract, Emotion, or Styled Components.
- Proven track record contributing to centralised design systems or component libraries.
- Deep understanding of modern frontend architecture (state management, hooks, component patterns).
- Proficiency in crafting responsive and accessible UI components.
- Strong knowledge of web accessibility standards and experience using screen readers for a solid understanding of their behaviour (JAWS, NVDA OR VoiceOver).
- Testing experience with tools such as Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, or Cypress.
- Familiarity with CI/CD, version control (Git), and semantic versioning.
- Experience documenting components using Storybook or similar tools and eventually training other developers on the design systems' usage.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across design and product teams.
- Experience with design tokens and tools like Style Dictionary or Supernova
- Familiarity with Figma or Sketch
- Exposure to visual regression testing tools (Chromatic, Percy)
- Experience with Next.js and knowledge of GraphQL APIs
This is a hybrid role, with a strong emphasis on in-office collaboration (4 days a week). The company believes the best ideas come from working together in person - with quiet zones for deep focus, collaboration spaces for big ideas, and social hubs for staying connected. This is a non-negotiable so this is ideally a role for those who value in-person collaboration.
The CultureThe team is built on three core values:
- Curious - a love of learning and problem-solving
- Relentless - driven to improve and deliver, even through challenges
- Customer-Obsessed - committed to creating great experiences for every user
If this sounds like your kind of environment and you are ready to make an impact through design-led engineering, we would love to hear from you.
