Legal Recruitment Consultant β Private Practice
Leeds β Β£30k to Β£35k basic plus uncapped commission β Hybrid (Tue-Thur in office)
Imagine this.
You are three weeks in. A partner from a well-known Yorkshire firm calls you directly about a hire. Not from a mail-shot. Not from a cold call. Because they already know the desk, trust the firm and want advice rather than CVs.
That is the reality of this role.
You are stepping into a private practice legal desk that has been trading for years. Established relationships across Yorkshire and the North East. Live mandates. Clients who pick up the phone. A name that already carries weight in the region.
The consultant who built the desk is going on maternity leave. You are not filling a gap. You are inheriting a functioning, revenue-generating market.
Your first month
- Two weeks working directly with the outgoing consultant
- Introductions to key clients and warm handovers of live briefs
- Exposure to how partners use the firm, not just what they recruit
- By week three you are already running searches, not shadowing calls
There is no cold start phase. No six months trying to be noticed. You are managing an existing portfolio from day one.
When the consultant returns, you move onto another established desk. Again with active clients and relationships. The model is consistent. Nobody here is thrown into empty markets.
How this firm actually works
This is not volume legal recruitment.
Success here comes from understanding how law firms really hire. Team structures. Succession issues. Partner dynamics. Why a two-year PQE might work better than a five-year one even when the brief says otherwise.
Consultants are not measured on activity. There are no leaderboards. The directors still bill themselves and care about outcomes rather than call numbers.
Hybrid is normal. Tuesday to Thursday in the Leeds office. The rest of the week is shaped around client meetings, candidate coffees and prep time.
Last year the average consultant earned over Β£40k in commission on top of base. Top performers significantly more. Thresholds are low, commission is uncapped, bonuses are quarterly.
The honest part
Legal recruitment is slow burn.
Clients pause. Searches drift. Partners go quiet. You will not be closing deals every Friday afternoon.
If you need instant wins and fast cycles, this will frustrate you.
But if you like building long-term credibility in a market where trust matters more than speed, this is a very good place to do it.
Who this suits
- You have done 360 recruitment before in legal, finance or professional services
- You are comfortable dealing with senior stakeholders
- You value quality conversations over activity metrics
- You want to build a career in a specialist market, not sit on a conveyor belt
- You are within commuting distance of Leeds.
What happens next
