As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be hands-on within a cross-functional Agile/DevOps team, designing, building, and supporting scalable customer and business-facing systems. You will play a key role in delivering secure, reliable, and maintainable solutions, while contributing to technical direction, engineering best practice, and continuous improvement across the team.
You will work closely with fellow engineers, Product Owners, Delivery Managers, and Architecture teams to help translate business and architectural requirements into well-engineered technical solutions. You will also be part of a wider engineering community, contributing to shared standards, modern ways of working, and the adoption of new technologies including AI-assisted software development.
This position will be based working remotely with the occasional visit fortnightly/monthly to our bright and modern offices in Welwyn Garden City.
Key responsibilities- Software Engineering & Solution Delivery
- Hands-On Engineering: Design, build, test, deploy, and support high-quality software solutions in a fast-paced product engineering team.
- Scalable Design: Develop maintainable, scalable, and resilient technical solutions that support business growth and meet both functional and non-functional requirements.
- Engineering Excellence: Write clean, well-structured code that adheres to SOLID principles, Clean Architecture, agreed coding standards, and solution architecture.
- Quality First: Ensure quality is considered from the outset of development through automated testing, peer review, and strong engineering discipline.
- Secure by Design: Demonstrate experience designing and developing features with security, privacy, and reliability in mind from day one.
- Systems Reliability: Help ensure that applications, systems, and services are performant, stable, observable, and supportable in production.

- Engineering Productivity: Explore practical opportunities to use AI-enabled tooling to accelerate routine engineering tasks such as refactoring, analysis, test generation, and knowledge sharing.
- Responsible AI Adoption: Follow established guidance around verification, security, licensing, and data protection when using generative AI tools in engineering workflows.
- AI-Aware Delivery: Contribute to the design or integration of AI-enabled product capabilities where relevant, with appropriate guardrails and technical oversight.

- Role Model: Act as a role model for other engineers on the team through high standards of delivery, collaboration, and engineering practice.
- Mentorship: Support and guide less experienced engineers through code reviews, coaching, pairing, and day-to-day problem solving.
- Technical Problem Solving: Take ownership of complex technical challenges and help the team adopt effective, pragmatic solutions.
- SDLC Contribution: Help ensure that application lifecycle practices, quality assurance, database engineering, and build/deployment processes are understood and followed by the team.
- Continuous Improvement: Actively contribute to improving the team’s processes, tooling, ways of working, and overall delivery quality.
- Agile Collaboration: Work closely with the Delivery Manager and Product Owner to support effective planning, estimation, and delivery within an Agile framework.
- Talent Support: Assist with recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of new engineering team members where required.
- Stakeholder Management & Operations
- Operational Readiness: Participate in an out-of-hours support rota to help ensure that applications, systems, and services in your area continue to run smoothly at all times.
- Experience: 5+ years of professional software development experience in a commercial environment.
- Microsoft Backend Expertise: Strong hands-on experience with C#, .NET Core / .NET 6+, and legacy .NET Framework applications.
- Architecture & Design: Experience designing applications using Clean Architecture principles, alongside microservices and/or distributed architecture patterns, with consideration for maintainability, scalability, security, infrastructure, and long-term supportability.
- Azure Cloud Ecosystem: Hands-on experience with Azure services such as Networking, Storage, Kubernetes (AKS), App Services, API Manager, and Monitoring.
- Database Engineering: Strong experience with relational databases including SQL Server, T-SQL, and Stored Procedures, as well as No-SQL platforms such as Cosmos DB.
- Web & API Development: Experience building modern frontend applications using Vue.js and React, with familiarity in component-based architecture, state management, responsive UI development.
- Frontend Ecosystems: Experience working with frontend frameworks and UI technologies such as AngularJS, KnockoutJS, Bootstrap, or Blazor.
- Testing & Quality Assurance: Strong commitment to software quality, including unit testing, integration testing, and experience with frameworks such as NUnit, MSTest, xUnit, and Moq.
- DevOps & Version Control: Experience using Git, GitHub and Azure DevOps for source control, build pipelines, and deployment automation.
- Messaging & Middleware: Experience with messaging frameworks such as Azure Service Bus or MSMQ.
- Testing & Monitoring Tools: Experience using Postman/SOAP, Selenium, Cypress, Splunk, or similar tooling.
- AI Tool Proficiency: Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools to support coding, testing, analysis, documentation, or engineering productivity improvements.
- DevSecOps: Experience embedding security practices and controls into development and CI/CD workflows.
- AI-Enabled Solutions: Exposure to building or integrating AI-powered features, services, or workflow automations.
- LLM / Generative AI: Familiarity with concepts such as prompt design, API-based model integration, retrieval-based patterns, evaluation, and guardrails.
- ORM Technologies: Experience with Entity Framework or NHibernate.
- Legacy BI Stack: Experience with Microsoft SSIS and SSRS.
- Mobile Development: Exposure to Android development frameworks.
- Modern Languages: Familiarity with, or strong interest in, newer languages such as Golang or Rust.
