About the role:

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team based in our Brighton office, with a strong background in building scalable, high-quality, and high-performance software solutions. This is a hands-on role where you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining software that is critical to our flagship access control products. You will also be responsible for mentoring and coaching team members.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing solutions for new features and bug fixes according to project requirements and specifications.
  • Providing leadership for project requirements, planning, and reporting.
  • Collaborating with the Principal Engineer, Apps, and Cloud teams.
  • Ensuring the technical integrity of user interfaces, back end API services, mobile apps, and cloud services, using test-driven design methodologies and best practices.
  • Identifying problems or risks early on in the development cycle to help the team avoid or mitigate these risks.
  • Providing input and suggestions to other team members' designs or participating in the decision-making process.
  • Reviewing your own and other people's code throughout the development process to ensure good coding practices.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on requirements, specifications, and designs to assure product quality.
  • Actively contributing towards decisions on overall architecture and technologies used in our software products.

What are we looking for?

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is required. Proven industry experience may be accepted as a substitute.
  • Solid experience in back-end development, especially in C# .NET, and experience with front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, Angular, or React would be advantageous.
  • Strong experience with .NET Web API.
  • Solid experience working with databases.
  • Knowledge or experience with Azure cloud services would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • An excellent team player who enjoys collaborating with other developers.
  • The right attitude is more important to us than your skills or experience. If you're excited about a role but your existing experience doesn't match up with every element of the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway.

We want to collaborate with you and hear your ideas; most of all, we want people to enjoy the journey with us.

How to prepare for a job interview at Paxton Access

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Paxton Access uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
