The Trainee Site Engineer will support the delivery of construction and civil engineering projects by assisting with surveying, setting out, quality control, and project administration activities. Working under the guidance of experienced Site Engineers and Site Management teams, the Trainee Site Engineer will develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required to progress into a Site Engineer role. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands‑on experience within the construction industry whilst developing a professional career in site engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with surveying and setting out works in accordance with drawings and specifications
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of site control points and levels
  • Learn to use surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS equipment, and laser levels
  • Assist in carrying out regular checks to ensure works are completed accurately
  • Support the maintenance of site records, quality documentation, and drawing registers
  • Assist with the preparation of site diaries, allocation sheets, and progress records
  • Help produce Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and Task Briefings
  • Assist in the preparation of short-term programmes and two‑week look‑ahead schedules
  • Support procurement activities by helping identify plant, material, and labour requirements
  • Attend site meetings and assist with communication between site teams, subcontractors, and clients
  • Report any technical issues or discrepancies to senior engineers and site management
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for improved efficiency and value engineering
  • Promote and comply with company Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality standards
  • Ensure all work activities are undertaken safely and in accordance with company procedures
  • Participate in training and development activities to build technical and professional competence

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A-Level, T-Level, HNC, HND, apprenticeship qualification, or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Construction, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • GCSE Mathematics and English at Grade 4/C or above
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • Willingness to work on construction sites and travel to project locations as required

Desirable

  • Currently studying towards a Degree, HNC, HND, or apprenticeship in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • Previous work experience within the construction industry
  • Basic knowledge of surveying or setting‑out principles
  • Experience using AutoCAD or similar software
  • CSCS Card
  • First Aid qualification
  • Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Genny training
  • Temporary Works awareness
  • IOSH Working Safely qualification
