Are you an experienced Bookkeeper or Accounts Manager who enjoys being trusted to keep the numbers accurate, organised and under control? This is a hands-on finance role with a successful, profitable SME where you will take ownership of the day-to-day accounts function and become a key person in the business. It is not a role where you will be one small part of a large finance team. You will be the person keeping the books accurate, the reconciliations up to date, the collections monitored, the payroll processed and the month-end information ready on time. You will work directly with the business owner and be trusted to get on with the job. The business is established, busy and stable, with a long-serving team and a close-knit culture. People tend to stay. It is the kind of environment where you can settle, build strong working relationships and become genuinely valued for the work you do.
This role would suit someone who enjoys responsibility, likes being close to the detail and takes pride in keeping things organised, accurate and running properly.
What you'll be doing:
- Monthly management information
- Bank, cash and credit card reconciliations
- Overseeing customer payment reconciliations
- Monitoring direct debit collections
- Debtor and creditor ledger maintenance
- VAT returns
- Journals, accruals and prepayments
- Payroll processing
- Preparing accounts up to trial balance
- General finance and office queries where needed
The business has around 1,500 customer accounts, with around 90% of customers paying by direct debit. A colleague oversees the billing process, but you will play a key role in making sure collections are accurate, reconciliations are completed properly, and any issues are picked up quickly. Experience using a small business accounting package is essential and a working knowledge of Sage 50 Accounts would be beneficial. Sage Payroll experience would be helpful.
What kind of person will suit this role?
This would suit an experienced Bookkeeper, Senior Bookkeeper, Accounts Manager, Company Accountant or hands-on finance professional who is confident working independently. You do not need to be someone chasing a corporate finance career path. You may simply want a stable, long-term role where you are trusted, respected and given ownership. You will need to be practical, reliable and comfortable being the person others come to when they need the numbers to be right.
You'll probably enjoy this role if you like:
- Running the accounts properly from start to finish
- Working directly with the owner of the business
- Being trusted without being micromanaged
- A stable office-based environment
- Variety in your day
- A close-knit team where people know each other
- Seeing the impact of your work on the wider business
This may not be the right role if:
- You are looking for hybrid or remote working
- You want to manage a large finance team
- You prefer a corporate finance environment
- You are looking for a short-term stepping stone
- You want a highly strategic finance role rather than a hands-on accounts role
But if you want a broad, steady, hands-on role where you can take ownership and be trusted to keep the finance function running properly, this could be a very good fit.
What's in it for you?
- Basic salary of £35,000 - £40,000 depending on experience
- Annual bonus of around £2,000
- A broad, varied accounts role with real ownership
- Direct access to the business owner
- A stable, profitable SME with a long-serving team
- A close-knit working environment
- Enhanced company pension scheme
- Free on-site parking
- Full-time, permanent role
