We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Bank Practice Nurse to join our healthcare team on a flexible basis. The successful candidate will provide high-quality patient care within a general practice setting, supporting the delivery of essential medical services. Main duties of the job:

  • Work on the Roving Health Units, delivering vaccinations to the local populations.
  • Cytology working within GP practices to support their vaccination campaigns in areas of deprivation and health inequalities.
  • Engage with the General Public to raise awareness around vaccinations and health.
  • Follow agreed policies and protocols, referring to the senior nurse or Head of Nursing as appropriate.
  • Maintain and clean equipment after use.
  • Maintain environment, including stock rotation and stock control.
  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of environment.
  • Stock taking of vaccines and reporting to lead nurse for ordering.
  • Use of clinical administration systems such as System1.
  • Accurate documentation of patient care recorded in a timely fashion.
  • Inform the lead nurse or the Head of Nursing of potential problems or issues arising within the day-to-day duties.
  • Attend meetings when required.
  • Any other delegated duties as appropriate to the post.
  • Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory/contractual/professional requirements, and good practice guidelines.
  • Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage, and transport arrangements.
  • Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions, either directly or under supervision.
  • Communicate effectively with other team members.

Job responsibilities:

  • Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice including provision, ordering, availability, and ongoing correct usage by staff.
  • Responsible for hand hygiene across the practice.
  • Ownership of infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, and implementation of those protocols.
  • Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control, ensuring that provision of hand cleansing facilities, wipes etc. are sufficient to ensure a good clinical working environment.
  • Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use, storage, and disposal.
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean, and sterile, and safe way, free from hazards.
  • Initiation of remedial/corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management.
  • Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised.
  • Spillage control procedures, management, and training.
  • Decontamination control procedures, management and training, and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintenance of sterile environments.
  • Demonstrate due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

  • The post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by PCL as part of this employment, such training to include participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.

Person Specification:

  • Registered Nurse (Nursing and Midwifery Council).
  • Has evidence of working at the relevant level of practice as described in the Primary Care and General Practice Nursing Career and Core Capabilities Framework.
  • Has attended and completed the 2-day fundamentals of vaccine administration course.
  • Experience of Practice Nurse skills including wound care, ECG, venepuncture, immunisations, new patient medicals, and women's health (cervical cytology, contraception etc.).
  • Request pathology tests and process the results, advising patients accordingly.
  • Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to promote best practice regarding nursing matters.
  • Ability to work within own scope of practice and understand when to refer to GPs.
  • Good clinical system IT knowledge and an ability to record accurate clinical notes.
  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively with people by telephone, email, and face to face.
  • Understanding of safeguarding adults and children.
  • Effectively able to communicate and understand the needs of the patient.
  • Broad knowledge of general practice and experience of working as a Practice or Community Nurse.
