Paterson & Cooke (UK) Ltd is seeking a Senior CAD Designer to join our team in Cornwall. This is a senior technical design role supporting projects in the mining and resources industry, with a focus on backfill, slurry transport systems, process plants, pump stations, pipelines and specialised equipment. The successful applicant will work closely with engineers to develop high-quality drawing deliverables for international mining clients. As a senior member of the design team, the role will also involve checking and reviewing drawings, mentoring junior and project designers, supporting design standards and contributing to the continued development of design capability within the UK office.
Reporting to the Design Office Manager, the Senior Designer will be responsible for producing, coordinating and reviewing mechanical, piping and process drawing deliverables in accordance with P&C standards and project requirements. The role requires a strong background in drafting and design, with the ability to produce technically correct, professional and well-presented drawings. The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of drawing deliverables, manage competing project priorities and support the delivery of accurate work to agreed schedules.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Developing and maintaining Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs) and Hydraulic Grade Lines (HGLs) from information provided by engineers
- Preparing general arrangement and layout drawings for piping systems, process buildings, pump stations, plant areas and related specialised equipment
- Producing pipework drawings, including arrangements, long sections and isometrics
- Developing and coordinating 3D models for process plant, piping systems, equipment layouts and associated infrastructure
- Performing material take-offs and developing bills of quantities, equipment lists and supporting project documentation
- Checking, reviewing and marking up drawings to ensure compliance with P&C standards, project requirements and good design practice
- Completing senior peer review of drafting deliverables and providing constructive feedback to other members of the design team
- Mentoring junior and project designers to support technical development and consistency of work
- Managing own workload and supporting planning of design activities to meet project deadlines
- Supporting the development and improvement of drafting procedures, templates and design standards
- Collaborating with colleagues in a professional manner and contributing to a culture of teamwork, technical quality and continuous improvement
Minimum Requirements and Competencies:
- Formal drafting/design training, or equivalent relevant experience
- Significant experience in a drafting/design role within engineering, process plant, mining, industrial or similar environments
- Demonstrable experience producing professional drawing deliverables for process plant, pump stations, pipelines or specialised equipment
- Strong experience using AutoCAD 2D and 3D
- Experience using Autodesk Plant 3D
- Good understanding of piping layouts, general arrangements, equipment layouts and isometric drawings
- Ability to interpret engineering information and translate this into clear, accurate drawing deliverables
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to check and review drawings against standards and project requirements
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and contribute positively as part of a wider project team
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- Experience in the mining or resources industry
- Experience using Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault or Autodesk Civil 3D
- Experience mentoring or supporting the development of junior designers

In addition to the base salary the position is eligible for annual bonus compensation based on company and individual performance. This role is also eligible to participate in the company’s benefits program including health and life insurance, employee ownership scheme, enhanced annual leave, occupational sick pay, a day off on your birthday and company pension scheme. For the right candidate, a flexible remote working arrangement may be considered, with regular attendance in the UK office as required.
