We are seeking a skilled and motivated Theatre Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) to join our consultant-led chronic pain service. This role begins as a Bank (Casual Worker) position, specifically for Thursday shifts in Gloucester. As our service grows, we hope to transition this into a permanent role with additional days/hours.

The role will deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients receiving pain management interventions. The post holder will work alongside Consultants in Pain Medicine and nursing colleagues to provide support before, during and after interventions such as nerve blocks, epidural injections, and radiofrequency ablations. This role combines advanced clinical skills with patient education and reassurance, ensuring individuals understand their treatment and feel supported throughout their care journey.

Main duties of the job

  • Preparing for and assisting in the delivery of a range of pain management interventions, such as nerve blocks, epidurals, and radiofrequency ablations.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures, escalating concerns promptly.
  • Provide clear, empathetic explanations of procedures and aftercare instructions to patients.
  • Maintain specialist pain management equipment, ensuring safety checks and servicing are completed and that faults are reported.
  • Support stock management, ordering consumables and medicines to maintain required levels.
  • Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives, and service development projects.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be expected to:

Clinical Care

  • Prepare procedural areas, equipment, and monitoring devices for pain management interventions.
  • Assist the pain consultant in delivering interventions such as nerve blocks, epidurals, and radiofrequency ablations.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures, escalating concerns promptly.
  • Provide clear, empathetic explanations of procedures and aftercare instructions to patients.
  • Uphold aseptic and infection prevention techniques at all times.
  • Accurately document all care and interventions in accordance with organisational standards.
  • Contribute to patient follow-up where appropriate.
  • Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, supporting the patient, family and other staff as required.

Operational Support

  • Maintain specialist pain management equipment, ensuring safety checks and servicing are completed and that faults are reported.
  • Support stock management, ordering consumables and medicines to maintain required levels.
  • Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives, and service development projects.

Professional Practice

  • Maintain professional accountability for all clinical actions.
  • Engage in CPD to keep skills and knowledge up to date.
  • Participate in reflective practice, supervision, and peer learning.

Person Specification

Skills and Knowledge

  • Understanding of surgical procedures, aseptic technique and infection control.
  • Ability to communicate reassuringly and effectively with anxious patients, explaining complex information simply.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously within scope of practice.
  • Strong clinical reasoning and assessment skills.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based approaches to care.

Experience

  • Experience in Anaesthetics, Scrub and Recovery.
  • Experience supporting interventional pain management procedures.
  • Exposure to chronic pain services.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Operating Department Practice or Degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification.
  • Current active registration with the Health and Care Professionals (HCPC) or Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Postgraduate training in pain management (Masters-level modules or equivalent - Desirable).
