Overview

Salary: £50,000 – £60,000 DoE

The Associate Forensic Fire Surveyor is responsible for the management, growth and development of a team of Forensic Fire Surveyors, providing training and support to assist their personal development.

This involves detailed site inspections, reporting, and coordination with fire engineers, building owners, and contractors to develop and implement remediation plans where necessary, in addition to conducting thorough assessments of building cladding systems and passive fire protection measures to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations, such as the Building Safety Act, and other relevant Regulation and guidance documents.

The role requires a holistic understanding of construction methods and details, and the principles of their selection for application. A technical understanding of external wall cladding and façade systems, fire-resistant materials, and regulatory standards is highly desirable, as is practical experience of intrusive site survey and/or material installations.

The role is primarily site/office-based, with the flexibility to work from home.

Main Duties

  • Conduct external wall cladding assessments and compartmentation/firestopping surveys on buildings to evaluate fire performance and compliance with safety regulations
  • Prepare detailed reports that will inform a fire engineer to create Fire Risk Appraisal of External Wall Systems (FRAEWS) and External Wall Fire Review (EWS1) forms, in line with regulatory requirements
  • Identify fire risks associated with cladding and firestopping systems and advise on appropriate remediation strategies
  • Work closely with fire engineers, architects, and building owners to recommend cost-effective, compliant solutions for fire safety improvements
  • Perform on-site inspections of building materials and construction methods, focusing on fire-resisting systems, façades, firestopping and insulation
  • Manage and oversee cladding and compartmentation/firestopping remediation projects, ensuring that work is carried out to the required safety and regulatory standards
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in fire safety regulations, materials, and best practices related to cladding and external walls
  • Line management responsibilities – you will manage a team and be expected to engage and monitor employee performance and report performance reviews to directors
  • Monitor project progress and manage deadlines efficiently
  • Support tendering processes by providing technical input and reviewing contractor proposals for cladding and fire safety works

Key Skills & Requirements

  • Demonstrable competency via either a degree in Civil Engineering, Building Surveying, Fire Engineering, Façade Engineering, or a related discipline or 10 years of recognised prior experience in these fields
  • Chartered status (RICS, IFE, CIOB, CABE) or working towards membership is highly desirable
  • Proven experience in façade/external wall inspections, fire consultancy, or building surveying, with a focus on fire safety, external wall systems and compartmentation/firestopping
  • Significant understanding of cladding systems, curtain walling, materials, and their fire performance characteristics (e.g. ACM, HPL, insulation types)
  • Familiarity with fire testing standards (BS 8414, BS EN 13501) and compliance frameworks (Building Safety Act, Approved Document B)
  • Understanding of fire safety legislation, including the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Fire Safety Act 2021, and Building Safety Act 2022
  • Strong technical report-writing skills and ability to clearly communicate complex fire safety issues
  • Capability to manage and develop a team of Forensic Fire Surveyors that will support the team lead
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites as required
  • Periodic overnight stays may be required for business-related travel

Rewards

  • Competitive salary
  • 9-Day Fortnight, with every second Friday OFF (following successful completion of 6-month probation)
  • Generous holidays: 27 days + bank holidays + period between Christmas and new year
  • Private healthcare
  • Flexible working
  • Company credit card
  • Confidential mental health support for you and your family, should you ever need it
