Succession planning provides a challenge to all forward thinking businesses, therefore the hunt is on for a Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer to join the team.

With Mechanical Engineers in such high demand but short supply, additional flexibility over the level of Engineer provides the opportunity to recruit the very best fit possible.

Applications are invited from Intermediate – Principal Engineer level, responsible for the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building services systems across a range of commercial, residential, healthcare, education, industrial, and public sector projects.

The role involves developing innovative, sustainable, and technically compliant engineering solutions while working with multidisciplinary design teams, clients, architects, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC systems
  • Domestic hot and cold water services
  • Above-ground drainage
  • Renewable and low-carbon technologies
  • Public health engineering systems
  • Produce engineering calculations, layouts, schematics, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Develop designs using industry-standard software including Auto CAD, Revit MEP, IES VE, Hevacomp, Magi CAD, or similar.
  • Prepare mechanical services drawings and coordinate designs with electrical, structural, architectural, and civil engineering disciplines.
  • Undertake heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, pipe sizing, duct sizing, and plant selection.
  • Ensure designs comply with current UK legislation, Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance, British Standards, and client requirements.
  • Attend client meetings, design reviews, and site visits as required.
  • Provide technical support during construction and respond to contractor technical queries.
  • Review contractor drawings, technical submissions, and commissioning documentation.
  • Support project delivery within agreed budgets and programme milestones.
  • Contribute to sustainable building design and energy-efficient engineering solutions.
  • Assist with mentoring graduate and junior engineers where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and design records.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree (BEng/MEng) or HNC/HND in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in mechanical building services design within a consultancy or contractor environment.
  • Working knowledge of UK Building Regulations and CIBSE guidance.
  • Proficiency in Auto CAD and Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of Revit MEP/BIM workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC and public health building services systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work to deadlines.
  • Membership of CIBSE, IMech E, or another relevant professional institution.
  • Working towards or already Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
  • Experience using IES VE, Hevacomp, Magi CAD, Revit MEP, or similar design software.
  • Familiarity with BREEAM, NABERS UK, Passivhaus, and Net Zero Carbon design principles.
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations and health and safety requirements.
