University Arms is a 192-bedroom design-led Hotel situated in the heart of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Overlooking Parker’s Piece is the Hotel’s quintessentially British Restaurant and Bar Parker’s Tavern, Library Lounge, and beautiful 272 square metre wood panelled Ballroom.
Opened in 1834 as a Coaching Inn, University Arms is Cambridge’s oldest Hotel.
For 180 years, the Hotel was added to, updated, and modernised in line with the age; however, it was the reopening in 2018 after a four-year £80m full renovation that really positioned the Hotel.
It is now Cambridge's 'go to' destination, alluring visitors with the promise of a sense of modern luxury.
WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING
As a Commis Chef, day to day, you’ll support the kitchen team to deliver a consistently high-quality product through the preparation of food and maintain a clean working area at all times.
You will follow the Chef’s directions of presentation for all dishes ensuring that all food comes out to a high standard and in a timely fashion.
You’ll move around the kitchen regularly so you can help different chefs and learn more about each station.
So, the duties can depend on each station you’re on.
Your tasks as a Commis Chef will include but will not be limited to
- THE DUTIES
- Assist in the preparation, cooking, and presentation of dishes to high standards
- Maintain excellent kitchen hygiene, cleanliness, and food safety practices
- Support senior chefs with daily mise-en-place
- Ensure stock is rotated and ingredients are stored correctly
- Helping with deliveries and restocking.
- Complying with all health and safety regulations and hygiene standards.

- A passion for all things food! with a basic knowledge of food preparation/ culinary operations.
- You may have already gained previous experience in the kitchen environment or currently be attending catering school.
- Willing to learn and try new things, you’ll also be able to multitask and work under pressure.

- You’ll be supported by your senior kitchen team to help you develop your culinary skills and reach your full potential.
- A good command of the English language and the ability to communicate confidently.
