I am seeking a site-based Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Manager to join a project team. Based in Peterborough, contract role starting within 2 weeks until June 2027 - hotel paid for. The SHE Manager will be site-based on a large energy from waste (EFW) construction project in Peterborough and will be responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, internal standards and promoting a safe working environment and good culture. The project is in the early stages and the team will consist of approx 50-70 operatives and subcontractors. The scope of works includes heavy groundworks, bulk and deep excavation, shoring, muckaway, drainage and service ducting installation, concrete chambers, piling attendance, dewatering.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • NEBOSH General/Construction Certificate or equivalent
  • 5 years+ experience as a SHE Advisor/Manager in construction/groundworks
  • Previous experience on energy from waste or power station projects - strongly preferred
  • CSCS card - preferred
  • First aid - desirable
  • Fire marshal - desirable

Personal skills:

  • Strong report writing and record keeping skills
  • Strong computer skills - good with Microsoft packages (Word, Excel), use of databases, systems and apps on digital tablets
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills on all levels
  • Attention to detail and strong organisational skills
  • Proactive and a good problem solver
  • Uphold high health and safety standards, legal and procedural compliance and can lead by example

Main responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Assist the Directors, SHEQ Manager and Project Manager in all matters relating to health, safety, quality, and environmental management to the site - being the primary go-to person for all such matters on site and wider organisation as required
  • Carry out HSE walk arounds daily to ensure compliance – minimum 50% of time on site every day
  • Carry out and record site inspections and audits (minimum x1 per week)
  • Ensure the completion and regular review of risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), COSHH assessments, manual handling assessments, toolbox talks, procedures and other safety related documentation as necessary
  • Carry out site (TVL) inductions and orientation
  • Carry out training, workshops and TBT’s on site where required
  • Assistance with the development and management of lifting plans, waste management plans, rescue plans, traffic management and site-specific plans and procedures as appropriate
  • Ensuring site specific PPE / RPE requirements are met
  • Carrying out RPE mask face fit testing (training can be provided to do this)
  • Oversee and order H&S / PPE related consumables, stock, materials and equipment
  • Maintain site COSHH stores, register and assessments
  • Ensure spill management prevention and control measures are suitable
  • Completing monthly HSE report for submission to client and TVL management team
  • Oversee high risk and complex works
  • Oversee and review temporary works arrangements on site
  • Ensure adequate dedicated cutting, re-fuelling and wash-out areas are in operation on site and remain compliant
  • Assist the organisation in compliance with relevant industry legislation including LOLER, PUWER, CDM, HASAWA etc.
  • Creation of safety alerts and toolbox talks as relevant to new industry standards, changing in seasons/weather and recording signed returns register
  • Assist with the creation of, and annual review of organisational policies and procedures
  • Attending site briefings
  • Management of site training and competency matrix spreadsheet, adding new starter information and cross-checking validity of details, right to work and qualifications etc.
  • Keep up to date with changes in current legislation and suggest such changes where discovered and as relevant
  • Support the organisation maintain ISO certification using the company management system and controlled forms
  • Management of site sub-contractor PQQ’s and reviewing sub-contractor RAMS for effectiveness and monitoring works
  • Carrying out incident investigations, RIDDOR and near miss reporting as may be necessary
  • Conducting witness / injured party interviews and compiling evidence for incident investigation reports
  • Conducting research into industry best practice approaches to help the organisation improve safety performance and efficiency
  • Conducting HAVS assessments and maintaining an up to date register
  • Any other ad hoc health and safety, environmental and quality duties as required
  • Providing additional general management and support to colleagues on site and across the wider business as required
  • Acting as the company site Mental Health Awareness champion and aiding the wellbeing of colleagues across the site
  • Any other relevant acts and tasks as may be reasonably requested by the Senior Management Team

Site working hours: Mon-Fri: 07:30 - 17:30 on site. Occasional Saturday work, currently forecasted at 2x per month.
