Responsibilities

Reporting to the Site Engineering Manager, the Chief Engineer will provide technical leadership and focus on technical excellence within the Engineering Department. This will principally involve oversight of Integrated Project Teams responsible for the development, manufacture and support of technical solutions that meet customer, business, regulatory, safety and human factors requirements. This position is a key member of the Engineering Leadership Team and Site Airworthiness Board and requires the position holder to possess the relevant experience to be appointed as a Company Design Signatory, responsible for both initial and continued airworthiness. In doing so, they must assume the correct level of maturity, competence and integrity to execute these duties effectively. A key part of this role is to provide the interface with external certification authorities, approval bodies and the Site Production Organisation.

The systems engineering team work with customers and certification authorities to define requirements and architecture for safety critical equipment and work with electronics, software and mechanical engineers to ensure equipment meets customer needs. As a member of the systems engineering team, you will be required to implement structured engineering solutions across the whole development lifecycle in accordance with regulatory, customer and business needs delivering against agreed technical, quality, cost and schedule requirements.

Role Summary

Main duties:

  • Ensure product safety and compliance with legislative, regulatory and customer requirements (including environmental and physical requirements).
  • Reviewing high level product documentation for compliance to process, and to certification demands, and signing as the accountable engineer for airworthiness.
  • Crucial role in the Airworthiness Board, meeting at regular intervals and ad-hoc as required.
  • Taking time-sensitive actions necessary resulting from the AWB to issue notifications to operators and regulators where there is any safety implication.
  • Chairing Change Control Board meetings.
  • Chairing and dispositioning Product Development Reviews, and judging pass/fail vs standard business process preset conditions.
  • Reviewing Engineering Problem Reports, acting as the chair for Problem Review Boards to agree resolutions and subsequent actions.
  • Ensuring Engineering processes comply with the relevant civil aviation regulations.
  • Chairing or co-chairing the Engineering Continuous Improvement Steering Committee.
  • Coordinating training in key systems and safety industry standards.
  • Supporting STEM activities.
  • Supporting development of early-career engineers towards professional registration.
  • Supporting university engagements, both from both a technology development and capability, and a recruitment channel standpoint.
  • Working with auditors to demonstrate compliance against AS9100.

Essential experience required in order to be considered for this role:

  • Knowledge of ED-79B, ED-12C and ED-80 and ability to plan a system development lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of ED-135 and able to review system safety documentation.
  • Knowledge of product certification in aerospace.
  • Able to act as the point of contact with the allocated UK CAA certification manager, and coordinate communication both internally and externally; be the one voice of the company from a certification standpoint.
  • Able to present certification plans and certification artifacts to regulators/customers and resolve certification issues.
  • Knowledge of UK civil certification regulations (CS-ETSO, CS-23/25/27/29, GM and AMC).
  • Knowledge of change and configuration control, and the kinds of systems used to maintain such control.
  • Ability to assess and validate system requirements, identify conflicting demands and constraints and review in the context of the products certification plans.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles, analytical methods, system modelling to assess a design for strengths and weaknesses.
  • Ability to critically review systems architecture documentation.
  • Experience of system testing and DO160G qualification testing.
  • Experience of diagnosing faults and implementing corrective actions.

In addition to the above, the following criteria are also desirable:

  • 15+ years' experience in avionics systems certification.
  • Experience of product certification with regulators such as UK CAA, EASA or FAA.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng).
