Commercial Combined Underwriter in Leeds

Commercial Combined Underwriter in Leeds

Leeds Full-Time On-site
P

Some underwriting jobs are easier to advertise than others.

This is one of them.

We’re recruiting confidentially for a major international insurer that has built one of the strongest reputations in the UK commercial insurance market. They don’t recruit into their Leeds underwriting team particularly often, which is probably as good an indication as any of what it’s like to work there.

They have an established, experienced Property & Commercial Combined team in place and are now looking for another Underwriter to join them.

For someone currently underwriting Property, Commercial Combined or Property & Casualty risks, this is an opportunity to join a business where you’ll be trusted to actually underwrite, develop broker relationships and use your judgement rather than simply follow a process.

The role

You’ll be joining an experienced regional underwriting team handling Property and Commercial Combined business through the broker market.

The role will involve:

  • Underwriting new and existing business within your authority.
  • Assessing Property and Commercial Combined risks and determining appropriate terms, pricing and coverage.
  • Building strong relationships with regional brokers.
  • Negotiating terms and finding commercially sensible solutions.
  • Managing your portfolio with a clear understanding of profitability and performance.
  • Working closely with an established team of experienced Underwriters.
  • Contributing ideas around appetite, strategy and how the portfolio develops.
  • Keeping close to the market and understanding where opportunities are emerging.

There’s plenty of experience around you, but equally they aren’t looking for someone who needs their hand held.

If you’re an experienced Underwriter, you’ll be given the autonomy and support to get on with the job.

What they’re looking for

Ideally, you’ll already have experience underwriting:

Property, Commercial Combined or Property & Casualty risks.

You don’t necessarily need to tick every box.

The bigger priorities are that you understand commercial underwriting, can build credible broker relationships and are confident making underwriting decisions.

You’re likely to be someone who:

  • Understands Property and/or Commercial Combined underwriting.
  • Has strong broker relationships or knows how to build them.
  • Can balance commerciality with underwriting discipline.
  • Understands pricing, risk selection and portfolio performance.
  • Enjoys being part of a good team without needing layers of management around them.

There is also flexibility around experience level.

The expected salary is around £55,000 - £65,000, but there is scope to go beyond this for an exceptional Underwriter with a strong track record.

Why this one is worth looking at

Quite simply, opportunities with this business in Leeds don’t come around particularly often.

You’ll be joining a very strong underwriting team within an insurer that can offer the scale, markets and career opportunities of a major international business, without making regional Underwriters feel like a small cog in a very large machine.

The package is also one of the better ones in the market:

  • 20% annual bonus
  • Hybrid working - typically 2-3 days in the office
  • Genuine flexibility around individual working arrangements where needed
  • Strong long-term career opportunities

They’ve also built a very good team in Leeds.

That’s important.

This isn’t an opportunity being sold on the promise that everything will improve in twelve months’ time. You’ll be joining an established team of good Underwriters, within a business that already has the infrastructure, reputation and broker relationships in place.

Interested, but not actively looking?

That’s absolutely fine.

In fact, we’re expecting most of the people suitable for this position to already be reasonably happy where they are.

No pressure and no expectation that you need to be actively job hunting.

Sometimes the better opportunities are the ones you weren’t looking for.
