The Parish of Harpenden is a busy and thriving Church of England community comprising three churches located across this attractive and popular town: St Nicholas in the town centre, All Saints in Batford and St Mary’s in Kinsbourne Green. The Parish Office, located in St Nicholas Church, serves all three churches, providing administrative and organisational support to ensure the smooth operation of the Parish as well as being the first point of contact for enquiries.

This is a part time role (10 hours per week) starting in September 2026 as Assistant Parish Administrator. The post is for 10 hours per week on 2 days during Parish Office Opening hours (10am to 2pm), preferably Wednesday and Friday. The role is paid at just over the Real Living Wage.

Responsibilities
  • Staff the Parish Office and provide day-to-day administrative support.
  • Manage parish enquiries and provide a welcoming first point of contact for visitors and callers.
  • Manage bookings, calendars, parish records, and routine office systems.
  • Support administration for pastoral services, safeguarding, and related parish processes.
  • Support parish communications, including notices, leaflets, and routine distribution.
  • Coordinate with volunteers and external providers to support parish operations.

Qualifications
  • A person who can act with discretion and ensure confidentiality.
  • Sympathy with and an understanding of the aims and ethos of the Church of England.
  • Willingness to learn new applications and IT systems.
Requirements
  • Ability to talk to a wide range of people.
  • Good administrative and organisational skills, shown by some experience of this work.
  • Good Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel etc) or equivalent and ability to learn other online and IT systems and applications.
  • Willingness to learn our ChurchSuite CRM system.
  • Ability to manage sometimes competing priorities, to multitask and to work under minimal supervision.
