The Radioactive Waste Specialist is responsible for the safe, compliant and efficient management of all radioactive waste entering and moving through the site. The role supports revenue growth by ensuring high standards of customer service, technical accuracy, regulatory compliance and operational excellence. This position leads customer interactions from initial enquiry through acceptance, processing and final disposal, ensuring all activities meet environmental permit conditions and site procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the first point of contact for customer enquiries.
- Provide technical guidance, including assessment against the site's Radioactive Conditions for Acceptance.
- Book in radioactive waste in accordance with environmental permit conditions and acceptance criteria.
- Arrange transport, documentation and labelling for incoming consignments where required.
- Safely receive, unpack and carry out radiological and physical checks on incoming waste.
- Lead or support the scheduling of radioactive waste through available processing routes, maximising efficiency and revenue.
- Maintain accurate electronic and paper-based records for all programmes.
- Provide clear burn plan instructions to operational shift managers.
- Monitor the site for potential radiological contamination.
- Provide technical support in the capacity of Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS).
- Support internal/external Duty of Care audits.
- Manage radiation dosimetry programmes for site personnel.
- Assist with regulator, customer and stakeholder visits.
Essential Skills & Competencies
- Qualified Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) or working towards qualification.
- Commercially aware with a strong service ethic.
- Experience supervising or line-managing staff.
Knowledge Requirements
- Health & Safety and Environmental legislation.
- Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) principles relating to radioactive materials (qualification desirable).
- UK radioactive waste management and nuclear sector knowledge.
- Understanding of hazardous waste processes, including chemical and physical waste behaviour.
