Location: Whipsnade Zoo
Hours: 8am-5pm Monday – Friday
Salary: £40-£50k DOE
Overview
The working Technical Supervisor plays a leadership role in the day-to-day management of engineering operations at Whipsnade Zoo. Reporting to and working closely with the Site Manager, the post holder is responsible for supervising and working out on site with the onsite maintenance team as well as in the office with the Contract Support, overseeing planned and reactive works, and ensuring compliance with all health, safety, and quality standards.
This role demands strong technical expertise in building services, M&E systems, and fabric maintenance, combined with proven experience in coordinating resources, managing contractors, and supporting team development. The Technical Supervisor is also expected to take a proactive approach to innovation, continuous improvement, and service delivery, contributing to a high-performing, client-focused facilities team.
Main duties
- Working alongside Contract Support to plan appropriate resources to deliver reactive, PPM, planned works in an evidencable approach to client which meets the KPIs
- Lead and supervise a maintenance team providing guidance and reviewing work on completion while fostering a strong team culture which promotes continuous improvement
- Management of specialist contractors\’ performance on site
- Maintain strong technical oversight of M&E systems, building services and fabric maintenance
- Actively respond to emergencies and assist trades as needed inside and outsides of normal working hours, and coordinate remedial action
- Carry out QHSE audits to ensure documentation and areas are compliant in line with health and safety legislative regulations
- Keep and maintain all company issued tools in a safe and working condition
- Manage emergency and contingency procedures under instruction of Site manager
- Issue and manage permits to work in line with site specific safety procedures
- To act as on call and duty engineer when on rota as well as point of escalation once probation is passed, deputising for site manager
- Actively identify and implement innovations to improve performance and consistently meet or exceed client expectations
Essential
- Previous experience in a similar role
- Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships, display initiative, confidence and professionalism
- Strong understanding of the built environment, with the ability to respond to requests promptly and deliver high-quality outcomes with a proactive approach
- Thorough understanding of health and safety regulations and legislation
- Hold a full valid driving license
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with a range of stakeholders
- Full proficiency in a range of Microsoft applications and administration skills
- Experience leading and managing a maintenance team effectively
- IOSH Managing Safely
- Recognised engineering qualifications to level 3 or equivalent in electrical/mechanical/building services
- Excellent telephone and email manner
- Quick to adapt to new software and procedures
- Keen to learn and develop new skills within self and others in the team
- Experience managing contractors on site
