HAL Engineer in Brighton

HAL Engineer in Brighton

Brighton Full-Time On-site

We know hardware is a jungle of chaos. Every device has quirks, every vendor hides secrets. To unify them, we need clean abstractions. We seek a Driver HAL Engineer to build the Hardware Abstraction Layer, the keel that keeps the ship steady.

Your mission is to make SP hardware-agnostic and hardware-ready. To design and implement the HAL across x86, ARM, and RISC-V, enabling portability without compromise. As a crew member you will design HALs that tame vendor idiosyncrasies, unify interfaces, and give the kernel a clean, reliable path to devices.

Where vendors divide, you will unify. Where they obfuscate, you will clarify. Your HAL will ensure SP runs consistently across laptops all platforms without compromise or hidden blobs. You are the architect of the invisible.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and maintain HAL frameworks for Umbrella OS.
  • Abstract device-specific code into clean interfaces.
  • Collaborate with driver and kernel engineers for integration.
  • Ensure HALs remain lightweight, open, and auditable.
  • Deep knowledge of hardware APIs and OS driver frameworks.
  • Low-level C programming.
  • Experience in embedded systems or OS portability projects.
  • Knowledge of GPU and accelerator abstractions.
  • Contributions to multi-architecture projects.

Tools & Technologies

  • Languages: C, C++, Assembly, Rust (preferred for safety).
  • Debugging: oscilloscopes, hardware analyzers, GDB/LLDB.
  • Build systems: Make, CMake, CI/CD.
  • Kernel testing environments.

Duration & Time Commitment

Full-time crew role, long-term position anchoring OS portability

  • Competitive salary aligned with mission-driven executive roles.
  • Remote-first flexibility, with gatherings in Brighton's Flagship for deep work.
  • A place at the helm of one of the most ambitious software revolutions of this century.
