We are looking for a Junior Unix Engineer to join Paragon’s hosting and infrastructure team and support the day-to-day running of their Unix estate.
As a Junior Unix Engineer, you’ll support the management and maintenance of Unix platforms across Paragon’s hosting estate, spanning on-prem, private cloud, and public cloud environments. You’ll work closely with senior engineers, helping to keep systems secure, stable, and performing well, while building your experience across automation, troubleshooting, and service improvement. This role is ideal for someone early in their Unix career who wants hands-on exposure across enterprise environments, cloud platforms, and modern infrastructure, while learning from experienced engineers and developing their technical skill set.
Responsibilities
- Support and maintain AIX and Linux systems (Red Hat, Oracle Linux, CentOS)
- Provide 2nd line support for Unix platforms, helping resolve incidents and service requests
- Assist with system patching, upgrades, and routine maintenance
- Monitor platform performance, availability, and capacity
- Support Unix environments across VMware and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, OCI)
- Follow ITIL-based change and incident management processes
- Help maintain documentation and configuration records
- Contribute to automation and continuous improvement initiatives
- Participate in an on-call rota and occasional out-of-hours support
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience supporting AIX and/or Linux in a production environment
- Working knowledge of Oracle Linux, including Ksplice
- Understanding of virtualisation, storage, and Unix networking
- Basic scripting skills (Bash, Python, or PowerShell)
- Experience working within ITIL-governed environments
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn
- Good communication skills and a collaborative approach
Preferred Skills
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or OCI)
- Experience with automation tools such as Ansible or similar
- Relevant certifications (RHCSA, RHCE, CompTIA Linux+)
- Experience working across multi-site or enterprise environments
Salary: £35,000
Contract: Permanent
Location: Remote (UK based)
This is a permanent remote role – with occasional travel to Paragon Sites. Hours Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm.
