Main Purpose of Job
This role is responsible for maintaining and repairing vehicles operated by our local authority client from their Wellingborough depot. Responsibilities include performing work to high standards within the workshop, ensuring adherence to vehicle maintenance and compliance regulations, and completing all paperwork accurately and promptly. The workshop chargehand will also liaise with onsite customers to ensure vehicles are maintained and defects repaired efficiently.
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities
- Conduct vehicle inspections according to VOSA procedures and company policies.
- Test and verify that systems and components are safe and functional.
- Diagnose faults by isolating systems or components.
- Repair or replace worn parts proactively to prevent breakdowns or damage.
- Obtain approval for repairs or parts fitting as per company procedures.
- Test drive vehicles where permitted and licensed.
- Utilize various diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Maintain flexibility to meet customer and workshop needs.
- Send daily VOR reports to the Workshop Controller before 9 am.
- Complete all maintenance paperwork to DVSA standards promptly.
- Provide daily handovers on fleet status and repairs.
- Manage workshop operations efficiently, minimizing vehicle off-road time.
- Manage workload for smooth workshop operation.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and compliant working environment.
- Create and process jobs in Fleetwave accurately.
- Ensure safety and security of personnel and premises.
- Obtain cost estimates from suppliers and seek approval.
- Monitor and replenish onsite consumables.
- Handle warranty parts and related paperwork.
- Participate in out-of-hours breakdown standby on a rota.
- Assist other workshops as workload allows.
- Work safely following risk assessments and using PPE.
About You
- HGV Apprentice Served Qualification
- Experience in municipal vehicle maintenance
- HGV Class 2 driving license (minimum)
- Good communication skills
- Ability to multitask in a busy environment
- Diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in reading and computer literacy
- Strong health and safety awareness
- Leadership and managerial skills
- DVSA HGV Inspection Course
- Knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems
