Please note: we have a substantive and secondment opportunity available. The ward currently has 53 beds commissioned and a 6 beds Coronary Care Unit. Within the Coronary Care Unit, you will be expected to care for acutely unwell patients such as post Myocardial Infarction who require interventions such as Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump and CPAP. The nursing dependency of the patients is diverse with direct transfers from the regional general hospitals and emergency pathways running through our department and as such is dependent on the clinical skills of trained and motivated nurses.

Cardiology is fast paced and is on the cutting edge of technology, providing excellent cardiology experience for staff caring for patients undergoing cardiology procedures: angiograms, angioplasty including the Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention service, ablations, cardiac devices and various cardiac valve related procedures.

The post holder will be responsible for managing nursing care and providing a safe, effective level of patient care, to assist with the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, maintaining excellent standards. The post holder will be expected to take charge of the ward/department on a daily basis and to deputise for the ward manager, participating in the supervision and teaching of staff and/or students. You will be expected to deputise in the absence of the ward manager and will oversee the day-to-day clinical operations of the department providing clear leadership to the nursing team by acting as an expert practitioner and role model, assisting junior colleagues to develop advanced knowledge and skills in order to benefit the treatment and care of critically ill patients in our hospital.

The role includes responsibility for systems which ensure the implementation, maintenance and monitoring of quality standards, the delivery of supervision and appraisal, and the management of clinical rosters in line with our performance goals. Person specification

  • Qualifications: Professional adult nursing qualification and clinical knowledge acquired through training to diploma or degree level. PLUS post graduate learning or experience relevant to practice with demonstrable competence OR specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience. Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council. Leadership/management training and/or experience.
  • Experience: Significant experience in field of own practice. The ability to lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team as well as mentor and educate junior staff. An understanding of clinical governance frameworks including Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), policy and procedure, audit and quality assurance. An understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, particularly those related to vulnerable patients. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to problem solve, use own initiative and plan, organise and prioritise own and others' workload. Evidence of continuous professional development and a willingness to participate in further training and education.
