Papworth Trust are looking for an Assistant Surveyor to join their Property team in this exciting new role. We are seeking someone looking to progress their surveying knowledge and skills, with training and support provided to the right candidate. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your surveying knowledge and skills while supporting the delivery of a professional and effective service across domestic and commercial properties.
This full-time, permanent position is based in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, with travel across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and Hertfordshire, so applicants must be able to commute reliably across these areas.

About the role: As Assistant Surveyor, you will support property inspections and asset management activities, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and safety standards. Working closely with colleagues, tenants, and contractors, you will help deliver a high-quality, customer-focused service. Working hours are 37.5 hours per week, with an anticipated 1-2 days office-based and the remainder spent visiting sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct stock condition, maintenance, measured, and pre/post inspections, producing accurate floor plans and reports, and diagnosing property defects including damp and mould
- Support major works and tendering programmes by preparing specifications and ensuring compliance with asbestos, fire, legionella, and other regulations
- Provide advice to tenants, contractors, and partners on works, permissions, and compliance matters
- Contribute to policy and service development, safeguarding tenants' wellbeing and reporting concerns in line with Trust procedures
- Participate in the on-call Duty Officer rota, maintain CPD, and actively support the Trust's mission and values
About you: As an Assistant Surveyor, you will share the Trust's commitment to equality, inclusion, and safeguarding. Ideally, you will have at least two years' experience within housing associations, council housing, or a similar environment, with experience in building inspections, maintenance, or asset surveying. Strong problem-solving, communication, numeracy, and IT skills are essential, alongside knowledge of housing maintenance, construction, building regulations, CDM, health and safety, and ideally compliance areas such as asbestos, fire, and legionella. You will be self-motivated, organised, and collaborative. Experience as a maintenance surveyor, asset surveyor, or a background in trades/contract management inspecting building works would be highly advantageous. Access to your own vehicle is required to travel between sites.
