The Role: We are seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coach to work alongside our sports coaching teams to support our student athletes and staff. This will include developing bespoke, segmented plans for a variety of teams and athletes, under the guidance of our Directors of Sport (Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Cricket, and Athletics). You will be expected to liaise and develop relationships with key stakeholders, both within and external to the School, including athletes, sport coaches, academics, School nurse, doctor and senior management. As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, you must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to cooperate towards a shared goal/vision of athlete health and wellbeing. As the S&C Coach you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a strength and conditioning program for all sports, with the three major goals of improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries, and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills. You will devise training plans according to sound scientific principles, supervise training sessions, evaluate athletes, maintain athlete records, and teach strength and conditioning classes as needed. You will also meet regularly with sport coaches to determine what the athletes need to work on. If working with an injured athlete engaged in rehabilitation you would also work alongside the School Nurse and/or Doctor and the PE/Games staff. The Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for maintaining the strength and conditioning facility, and for working with the Health and Safety manager to establish policies, plans, and procedures for the safe and professional operation of the facility.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement strength training and conditioning programs in-season, off-season, and pre-season for all school athletic programs in a manner that reflects research-driven practices.
  • Deliver S&C sessions from 7am-8:45am each morning of the week. 45 minutes of each day is available also for admin purposes.
  • Work in cooperation with the School Nurse/Doctor or PE/Games staff in the rehabilitation and strengthening of injured athletes.
  • Liaise with the Directors of Sports on the lunch time provision on S&C to enable continuity/extension of activities.
  • Facilitate a collaborative relationship among sport coaches, the PE/Games staff, and academic/pastoral team members.
  • Design and implement policies and procedures for the strength and conditioning program in accordance with Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards Guidelines.
  • Develop systems for tracking athlete attendance and athlete progress in conjunction with the sport coaches and the School Office for attendance registration.
  • Conduct an annual needs-analysis for each sport team in conjunction with the Directors of Sports (Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Cricket, and Athletics) at the conclusion of each sport season.
  • Annually conduct and review a departmental risk management plan.
  • Complete an annual budgetary proposal for the program that includes routine maintenance, purchase of new equipment, and staffing needs (overseen by the DoS).

The Ideal Candidate:

  • A recognised academic sports or science related qualification at Degree level or equivalent (or extensive appropriate experience).
  • Appropriate accreditation (IUSCA, UKSCA, or similar) or willingness to work towards qualification or alternative/significant experience of athlete support in a performance sport environment.
  • Understanding of Performance Sport Development preferably in an educational setting.
  • Fitness/conditioning experience (e.g. fitness program planning and delivering for performance improvement).
  • Proven background in facilitating and delivering S&C support to performance athletes ideally in an educational setting.
  • Experience of performing needs analysis and field based testing for athletes and prescription of tailored service provision.
  • Experience of working with coaches, NGB's and performance sport practitioners from a variety of disciplines.
  • Good IT skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organisational, administrative and planning skills.
  • Excellent communication skills - written, oral and presentation skills and with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Customer focused approach to work, but able to prioritise.
  • Strong time management and ability to meet deadlines.
  • An understanding of various sport science disciplines and key performance indicators.
  • A creative and innovative approach to athletic development.
  • Ability to work within a team and contribute to team development.
  • Ability to deal with conflicting demands without supervision.

About the school/organisation: The Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
