Overview
Are you ready to lead electrical innovation in industrial refrigeration systems? As a Lead Electrical Design Engineer on our Non-Traditional Requests (NTR) Team, you’ll drive custom-engineered solutions powering chillers, heat pumps, and related equipment. You’ll design and document the full electrical architecture, including schematics, wiring diagrams, I/O configurations, sequence of operations, and component layouts. You’ll own projects from concept to field startup, collaborating with customers, manufacturing, quality, and service teams to bring complex systems to life. You’ll assume full technical responsibility for industrial projects and serve as the go-to expert for electrical design.
You’re a hands-on problem-solver who thrives in cross-functional environments and enjoys taking ideas from sketch to switch-on.
Responsibilities
- Lead the electrical design on Industrial Systems Engineering projects, adhering to department goals and standards
- Design electrical systems and controls, including PLC type, for refrigeration, heat pump, and chiller products with CO2 refrigerant
- Apply knowledge of electrical power distribution and controls
- Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Sales to develop required product requirements
- Work with vendors, business partners, consultants and Engineering of Record (EORs) to collect data and requirements for components
- Discuss advantages and disadvantages of Hussmann products in comparison to other manufacturers
- Communicate requirements and changes to all relevant departments
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of power systems, relay protections, VFDs, refrigeration electro-mechanical and electronic components, design tools, and methodologies; apply electrical power distribution and control knowledge
- Select project electrical components based on design requirements and company standards
- Travel up to 25% as needed
Qualifications
Formal Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred)
5+ years of directly related refrigeration, heat pump and chiller engineering experience
- Broad knowledge of refrigeration, heat pump & chiller products, including trans-critical CO2, cascade CO2, and CO2 secondary systems; experience with electrical and power sub-systems for parallel compressor products; strong knowledge of sequence of operation, I/O layouts and design, programming logic and controls (micro-processor based and PLC)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and interviewing skills to extract design intent from customers and translate to design documents
- Ability to discuss Hussmann product advantages/disadvantages compared to other manufacturers
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Willingness to travel up to 25%
Preferred
- Broad industry product and systems knowledge; experience with other refrigeration system manufacturers is a plus
- 3+ years of CO2 design and development experience
- Flexibility to adapt to new processes, ideas, and tools; openness to learning new technologies
- Knowledge of application engineering tools and ability to support tool development with application and sustaining engineers
- Ability to contribute to improving the financial impact of engineering activities and understanding of how other functions impact the business
