Responsibilities include performing start‑up and functionality checks on newly installed HVAC, plumbing, and electrical components, equipment, and systems, ensuring operation meets engineering or factory specifications. Verify that all components and systems are installed per applicable city and trade codes and coordinate with subcontractors or vendors to guarantee proper operation. Interpret drawings, identify errors or omissions, and advise the appropriate supervisor. Install, connect, or adjust thermostats, humidistats, sensors, controllers, and related mechanical parts according to plans. Disassemble and reassemble commercial mechanical and plumbing equipment to perform troubleshooting and preventive maintenance as needed, ensuring equipment is level and aligned. Explain work performed to customers, including startup and commissioning of building automation and refrigeration systems, to their satisfaction. Provide installation of controls as necessary to ensure complete operation of newly installed and existing equipment and building automation and refrigeration systems. Diagnose HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and/or electrical system performance through observation, testing, and setup as required by plans and specifications. Complete necessary documentation accurately and timely to fulfill customer paperwork for invoicing and EPA requirements. Read and comprehend plans and blueprints for cabling, communication loops, and components associated with energy management and refrigerant leak systems. Read, analyze, and interpret plans, specifications, contract documents, control drawings, service bulletins, technical procedure manuals, equipment specifications, and governmental regulations. Maintain and manage truck inventory accurately, neatly, and orderly, and adhere to vehicle maintenance program guidelines (if applicable). Manage multiple priorities with minimal guidance, demonstrating leadership on projects. Train and guide less experienced Start‑Up Technicians to improve their skill sets. Follow established procedures and deviate only when the technical situation warrants.
Qualifications
- Formal Education Requirement: High School or ten years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred Level: Technical Degree.
- Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years with HS/GED; zero years with Technical Degree.
- EPA 608 Level 3 certification.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
- Physically able to climb ladders, work at high elevations, and lift objects up to fifty pounds.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, detail‑oriented, and highly motivated.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and out of town as required.
- Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities in a fast‑paced work environment.
