Overview
Pan Macmillan seeks a Permissions Manager with experience in rights, permissions or contracts to join the Rights Department. You will be the central guardian and facilitator of our content, handling all permission requests via our bespoke portal across all titles.
Your Role
As the Permissions Manager, you will act as the crucial link between external requests and our intellectual property (IP), managing end‑to‑end permission requests and maximizing ancillary rights income.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary custodian of content rights, assessing and granting all permission requests via our portal to safeguard IP and commercial interests.
- Manage the full lifecycle of complex, high‑profile licensing requests (e.g. brand usage, TV/film props, illustrator exhibitions).
- Conduct analysis of author/illustrator head contracts to confirm precise rights held, mitigating legal risk and ensuring full contractual compliance.
- Negotiate and secure optimal financial terms, raising agreements and invoices to maximise ancillary revenue.
- Proactively manage and reduce outstanding debt, chasing overdue invoices and working with finance for prompt payment.
- Collaborate with Communications and Brand/Licensing teams on non‑traditional requests, assisting in drafting key partnership agreements.
- Maintain meticulous financial and agreement records within Biblio for seamless contract tracking.
Essential Experience, Abilities and Knowledge
- Proven rights/permissions/contracts experience, ideally in a trade publishing house or related media/licensing environment.
- Comprehensive understanding of author and illustrator head contracts, with the ability to interpret rights and licensing parameters.
- Working knowledge of rights management software such as Biblio.
- Commercial acumen: analysing complex requests, ensuring compliance and negotiating optimal terms.
- Problem‑solving skills to resolve complicated rights issues efficiently.
- Excellent written, oral and numerical communication skills, with integrity and clarity.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organisational skills, prioritising effectively and adapting quickly to change.
- Proactive, supportive, communicative approach that contributes positively to team collaboration.
- Curiosity about digital tools and AI (e.g. Gemini) to streamline tasks and improve workflow.
