Job Summary
To support design activities that will provide mechanical design solutions from initial concept through to product manufacture.
Scope of Responsibilities
The scope of responsibilities could cover the entire project or a module of the project, and the team size varies accordingly. Ensure all applicable mechanical design work will meet company, airframer, regulatory and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Responsible for the design and detail modeling of a variety of suite components in order to meet programme requirements.
- Produce designs to meet specified cost/weight targets.
- Design Engineers will be expected to communicate effectively and professionally with customers and suppliers.
- Participate in Design Reviews throughout each phase of the New Product Introduction process.
- The selection and application of materials and processes appropriate to each design element.
- Ensure the successful integration of each design element within the product as a whole.
- Check engineering packages.
- Participate in the validation of the product (using such methods as prototyping, test, DFMEA).
- Follow and contribute to the development of the Best Practice guidelines.
- From time to time, Design Engineers must be prepared to undertake tasks outside of their normal duties as requested by their immediate supervisors.
Knowledge, Experience, Training and Qualifications
- Qualified to a minimum of degree in a Mechanical / Aerospace / Structural Engineering field. Alternatively a HNC/HND or an equivalent qualification in Mechanical / Aerospace / Structural Engineering apprenticeship, with extensive experience in mechanical systems design, developing concept and detailing engineering solutions.
- Proficient with experience in CATIA V5 (or other 3D CAD packages) and Product Life Management (PLM) Systems.
- The applicant should have an understanding of the effective application of tolerances and a working knowledge of manufacturing processes, as well as OEM installation requirements.
- A working knowledge of these main methods of manufacture; sheet metal fabrication, plastics vacuum forming, CNC machining.
- Ability to read mechanical design drawings and specification.
